The Oakland Athletics failed to win their eighth straight road series as they fell to Roy Halladay and the Philadelphia Phillies 3-1 on Sunday. Josh Outman put together a solid outing but a two-run Phillies first was more than enough as the A’s could get nothing going against a dominant Roy Halladay. Halladay earned the complete game victory over the A’s as he gave up one run on eight hits.

The A’s had some opportunities to get more runs or at least chase Halladay out of the game but could not get the timely hits. In the top of the second, the A’s put men on first and second with no outs and came away with nothing. In the seventh the A’s put men on second and third with one out and again came away with nothing.

East Bay native Jimmy Rollins led the way for the Phillies, going 4-for-4 with two runs scored. Shane Victorino and Ben Francisco each had an RBI as the Phillies improved to 49-30 and sit 4 1/2 games up on the Braves in the NL East.

The loss drops the A’s to 35-44. The Rangers are currently trailing the Mets so the A’s may not drop further than the six games back they were at when the day began. Oakland will now head home for six games against the Florida Marlins and Arizona Diamondbacks.

The Oakland Athletics wrap up their three game set with the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday and will look to secure a road series win for the first time since early May. The first full weekend in May saw the A’s take two of three from the Kansas City Royals and since then the best they’ve done is a road split of four games with the Los Angeles Angels.

The A’s lineup for Sunday sees David DeJesus sitting for the second straight game. After being a regular starter under Bob Geren, DeJesus has seen his playing time cut fairly dramatically under Bob Melvin. Since Melvin took over, DeJesus has started eight games and sat eight games, coming off the bench to pinch hit in three of the latter. He’ll sit again as Ryan Sweeney gets the start in right field.

HIdeki Matsui will start in left field for the third straight day. Melvin has stated that Matsui will return to the DH role during the upcoming Marlins series so that DeJesus can get some starts against right-handed bats. In the meantime, he’ll continue in the field.

The Oakland Athletics wrap up their National League road games as they look to secure a series victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Sunday. The A's defeated Philly 4-1 on Saturday behind strong pitching from Trevor Cahill and a few timely hits through the lineup. The win was only the A's second road victory in interleague play this season. The victory allowed the A's to cut the Texas lead in the AL West back down to six games.

The A's will look to win the rubber match with Josh Outman facing Roy Halladay. Although Halladay has a 4.54 ERA in 16 career starts against the A's, he is 3-0 with a 2.09 ERA over his last five starts. Josh Outman will look to continue his solid run since returning from Tommy John surgery. Since returning to the big leagues Outman has been solid night in and night out. Aside from his poor 2 2/3 innings performance against Boston, Outman has gone at least six innings each start and given up no more than three runs.

The A's and Phillies will square off at 10:35am pacific on Sunday on CSN California before the A's head home for a six game homestand.

The Oakland Athletics ended a three game skid courtesy of strong pitching from Trevor Cahill as they defeated the Philadelphia Phillies 4-1. Cahill had lost five straight decisions before bouncing back with a strong performance last weekend against the San Francisco Giants. He showed that start was no fluke as he held the Phillies to one run on three hits and three walks over 7 2/3 innings. Childhood Phillies fan Andrew Bailey pitched 1 1/3 inning for the save.

Cahill matched up with Cole Hamels in a solid pitchers’ duel with Cahill grabbing the slight edge. The Phillies took an early lead on a Carlos Ruiz RBI single in the second. However, the A’s bounced back quickly in the third inning as Adam Rosales hit an opposite field home run that cleared the fence by only a couple feet. The A’s followed that up with a Scott Sizemore RBI single in the fourth to take a 2-1 lead.

Trevor Cahill carried that lead into the eighth inning as he kept the Phillies from threatening for much of the game. However, Philly put men on first and third after a double, wild pitch and a walk with two outs. Andrew Bailey came on to get the final out in the eighth inning as he forced Chase Utley to ground out to first.

The ninth was anti-climactic as the A’s grabbed a pair of runs in the top of the ninth on a Mark Ellis RBI single and Coco Crisp sacrifice fly. The Phillies put men on first and second with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but Bailey induced the 4-6-3 double play from Domonic Brown to get the victory.

The A’s and Phillies play the rubber match on Sunday at 10:35am pacific. Josh Outman will face Roy Halladay in the series finale on CSN California.

Oakland Athletics manager Bob Melvin submitted his latest version of the A’s lineup and he continues to mix and match parts trying to find something that will provide a remotely consistent offensive threat. The A’s offense has hit another rut as they have scored a total of three runs in three consecutive losses to the New York Mets and Philadelphia Phillies. This after they seemed to find some life during a six game winning streak.

For Saturday’s game with Philly, Melvin is giving Cliff Pennington the day off and will start Adam Rosales in his place. Rosales put together solid numbers in 2010 but has yet to find consistent playing time since being called up almost three weeks ago. He’s played in six games during that time and is sitting at 2-for-17.

Mark Ellis will get his second start at first base while the A’s move Conor Jackson into right field for the evening. That means David DeJesus will head back to the bench. Since Melvin took over, DeJesus has struggled to find an everyday role as Melvin has rotated him, Jackson, and Ryan Sweeney in the outfield. Even with Josh Willingham’s injury, Hideki Matsui has taken on the primary left field duties in interleague play. It will be interesting to see how the A’s handle left field and DH when they return to Oakland on Tuesday.

The Oakland Athletics send out Trevor Cahill Saturday evening to face the Philadelphia Phillies in hopes of ending the A’s three-game winning streak. The A’s interleague series road struggles have continued as they’ve now lost six of seven road games against National League opponents.

Trevor Cahill makes his 17th start of the season in a run that has been split between fantastic and mediocre. Through his first ten starts, Cahill gave up more than two earned runs in only one start. In his next five starts, Cahill gave up at least three earned runs in each start. More importantly, his walk totals climbed precipitously. Through his first ten starts he walked 20 batters in 65 1/3 innings. In his next five starts he walked 21 batters in 26 2/3 innings.

In Cahill’s most recent start, he threw eight innings of one-run ball against a struggling San Francisco Giants offense. He scattered five hits and one walk and appeared to have regained the command and dominance he had lost for five games. The question now is whether he is actually back on track, or whether it was more a product of a poor Giants offense.

Saturday’s start against the Phillies will help in that determination as they roll out some heavy hitters. Their offense has actually struggled a bit this season as they are 14th in the majors in runs scored. Either way, guys like Ryan Howard, Chase Utley, Jimmy Rollins, and noted A’s killer Placido Polanco will all be tough outs for Cahill.

For the second time in three games the Oakland Athletics came out on the losing end of a walk-off hit as the Philadelphia Phillies won 1-0 Friday night on a single in the ninth. Guillermo Moscoso pitched seven brilliant innings but the offense struggled once again and Brian Fuentes dropped to 1-8 with the walk-off single. Wins and losses are not particularly indicative of a relief pitcher’s worth, but it definitely seems like Fuentes has pitched like a 1-8 pitcher for long stretches this season.

A’s starter Guillermo Moscoso and Phillies starter Vance Worley both put together strong starts as they each took a no-hitter into the sixth inning. Of course, Worley’s was probably a little less impressive not because of the four walks he issued, but the fact that the A’s offense is just not very good.

Both no-hitters were broken up in the sixth inning but neither team could get runs on the board heading into the ninth. The A’s went down in order, at which point Brian Fuentes came on in relief of Joey Devine. Shane Victorino worked a tough lead-off walk and then advanced to second on a Domonic Brown one-out single. Both runners advanced on Brian Schneider’s ground out to first, which brought up pinch-hitter Ben Francisco.

After working a 2-0 count, Francisco bounced a grounder down the third base line. Sizemore had been playing right near the edge of the grass, possibly looking for a sly attempt at a bunt. Instead, the bouncer shot up over Sizemore’s head into left field allowing Victorino to easily score. Had Sizemore been playing back he probably easily makes the play, but that doesn’t really take Fuentes off the hook for putting the defense in that position in the first place. Either way, the A’s walk away with their third straight loss.

The A’s and Phillies are back in action Saturday at 4:05pm pacific on CSN California. Trevor Cahill will square off with Cole Hamels as the A’s look to snap their losing streak.

The Oakland Athletics and Philadelphia Phillies are playing in the seventh inning of a scoreless game that saw a fantastic early pitchers’ duel between less known starters Guillermo Moscoso and Vance Worley. Neither started the season with their respective big league club but both have put together solid 2011 seasons and it was capped off Friday night with a pair of solid starts to the game.

Both Worley and Moscoso were able to take no-hitters into the sixth inning of the game before finally surrendering a first hit. Worley, a Sacramento native lost his no-hitter on a two-out Hideki Matsui double to left center field. Prior to the double, Worley had struggled a bit with control, walking four batters. He shot his pitch count up pretty high and left after getting the final out in the sixth.

Moscoso lost his no-hitter in the bottom of the sixth on a one-out single by noted A’s killer Placido Polanco. He recovered to retire Chase Utley and Ryan Howard for the final two outs of the inning. He is now pitching in the seventh inning with the score tied at zero.
