The Stanford Cardinal cruised to a 14-2 victory over the Illinois Fightin Illini Sunday evening and now find themselves in the super regional round of the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament. The Cardinal entered their region as the number two seed but cruised to a 3-0 record that was helped by Illinois knocking host Cal State Fullerton in the loser's bracket. The Cardinal will now face number one seed North Carolina. The Tar Heels are also the third overall seed in the entire tournament.

The Cardinal took control from the get-go as they put up a run in the first and four more in the third inning. Illinois grabbed a run in the third and another in the fourth but Stanford put down their foot and killed any momentum Illinois might have had. After scoring a run in the fifth inning, Stanford added two more on a Ben Clowe home run in the sixth inning, and then four more in the seventh inning. Two more in the ninth were merely icing on the cake.

Stanford will likely be playing at North Carolina beginning June 10. The winner will advance to the eight-team field in the College World Series.

The California Golden Bears pulled off a monstrous comeback against the Baylor Bears Monday night to advance to the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament super regionals. Cal trailed 6-1 after four innings and 8-5 in the ninth inning but rallied with four runs in the bottom of the ninth to shock the Baylor Bears. Cal advances to the super regionals where they will face fellow three seed Dallas Baptist for the right to play in the 2011 College World Series.

Cal grabbed the first run of the game in the first inning on a Marcus Semien two out double that drove in Tony Renda. However, Baylor took control of the game in the fourth inning as they put up a six spot courtesy of a lot of help from Cal. Baylor drew three walks and Cal had an error that resulted in two unearned runs. Baylor added a run in the sixth to take a 7-1 lead.

Cal began their comeback with an RBI single and a sacrifice fly to cut the elad to 7-3. Cal added two more in the eighth on a Devon Rodriguez homer but Baylor responded with a run in the ninth to make it 8-5. That's when the drama began. Chad Bunting reached on a single. Darrel Matthews then reached after a fielding error by the second baseman, leaving men on first and third and nobody out. Mich Theofanopoulos then reached on an error that led to an out at third but scored a run in the process to cut the lead to 8-6.

Leadoff hitter Austin Booker was then hit buy a pitch putting men on first and second. Tony Renda singled to drive in Dwight Tanaka (who had run for Theofanopoulos) and advance Booker to third. Chadd Krist followed that up with a walk to load the bases with one out and the score 8-7. Marcus Semien struck out for the second out of the inning, which brought up Devon Rodriguez. After falling behind 1-2, Rodriguez smacked a single into right field, bringing home Booker and Renda, and bringing the Cal bench onto the field to celebrate the stunning victory.

The win marks a huge comeback for Cal baseball. The Bears lost their tournament opener to Baylor, which moved them into the loser's bracket and required them to then win four games. Had they beaten Baylor they only would have needed two wins. Either way, Cal has advanced on to the super regionals. They will face Dallas Baptist June 10-13 with the winner advancing to the 2011 College World Series.

The California Golden Bears wrapped up a huge double-header sweep Sunday evening, taking down the second-seeded Baylor Bears with an 8-0 victory. Cal's victory creates a winner-take-all elimination game Monday afternoon at 4:00pm pacific at Reckling Park in Houston. The winner advances to the super regional round of the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament, while the loser heads home for the summer.

The two Bears squads threw up goose eggs for 5 1/2 innings as neither team could gain an edge. Cal finally broke through in the sixth inning as right fielder Chad Bunting hit a solo home run to give Cal a 1-0 lead. Kyle Porter and the Cal bullpen did an excellent job holding onto the lead as they gave up four hits and two walks but no runs.

Cal completely broke this one open in the eighth inning as they exploded for seven runs. After Chadd Krist and Marcus Semien reached base, Devon Rodriguez singled home Krist. Two batters later, Bunting hit a three run bomb and the rout was on. The Bears added three more runs on a single and a double to take complete control.

Cal and Baylor will square off at 4:00pm pacific and the game can be heard on KALX 90.7 FM. The winner will advance to the super regionals for a best of three series with the winner of Dallas Baptist and Oral Roberts.

The UCLA Bruins baseball team handled its business on Sunday afternoon, defeating the University of San Francisco Dons 4-1 in a must-win elimination game for both teams. The Dons had defeated UCLA to open the tournament but were unable to duplicate the feat Sunday afternoon. UCLA advances on in the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament to face the UC Irvine Anteaters. UCLA needs to sweep two games Sunday night and Monday morning to advance to the super regional. Irvine only needs one win to advance.

The Bruins jumped on top early with a run in the second inning and two runs in the third inning. Pat Valaika and Dean Espy had RBI singles, while Cody Regis had an RBI double to secure the 3-0 lead. Jeff Gelalich added an RBI double in the seventh inning. USF tried to put together a rally in the ninth inning and much like the day before against UC Irvine, they had a chance to tie the game. However, they fell short for the second day in a row and were eliminated from the tournament.

UCLA is now in the finals with UC Irvine and they are in the midst of the first game. UCLA leads 3-0 in the bottom of the fifth. If the Bruins win tonight, the two teams will meet Monday evening in a winner-take-all elimination match, with the winner moving on to the super regionals.

The California Golden Bears kept their regional hopes alive with a 6-3 victory over the Rice Owls. The Owls were serving as host of the Houston regional in the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament. The Bears were able to come back against the Owls and outlast a lengthy weather delay to secure a place in the regional finals with the Baylor Bears. Baylor defeated Cal 6-4 in the regional opener. Cal will now need to win two straight games against Baylor to advance to the super regional round.

Rice jumped on top of this game early, taking a 2-0 lead in the second inning on two unearned runs. Michael Ratterree singled to lead off the inning. Craig Manuel followed as he reached base on a bunt attempt that was fumbled by Cal starter Dixon Anderson. That was followed by another bunt attempt fumbled by Anderson that led to a pair of runs.

Cal used a pair of singles and a hit batsman to tie the game at 2, but Rice bounced right back with a Keenan Cook home run to take a 3-2 lead. Cal tied the game once again in the seventh inning as Darrel Matthews scored on an Austin Booker single. The teams moved into the bottom of the eighth inning when the lightning delay began.

The game was delayed for a little over an hour before play was resumed. Cal jumped all over Tyler Duffey, notching three runs on two singles and three errors, which typified just how ugly this game was at times. Matt Flemer was able to slam the door in the ninth and Cal earned the tough victory.

The Bears will face Baylor at approximately <strike>6:35pm</strike> 7:15pm pacific due to the weather delay. Cal needs to win this first game to avoid elimination. If Cal wins this first game, the second elimination game is scheduled for 4:00pm pacific on Monday. The first game can be heard on KALX 90.7 FM.

The Stanford Cardinal escaped with a 1-0 victory over the top-seeded Cal State Fullerton Titans to advance to the finals of the Fullerton regional. With the victory the Cardinal need one more win to advance to the super regional where they would face the winner of the Chapel Hill regional. Fullerton’s loss means they’ll face Illinois for the right to face Stanford in the final game(s).

The two starting pitchers threw up goose eggs for 5 1/2 innings as neither team could get anything on the scoreboard. However, in the bottom of the sixth Stephen Piscotty homered to give Stanford a 1-0 lead. The Stanford pitchers made the lead hold up. Jordan Pries held the Titans to two hits and Chris Reed closed the game out with 1 1/3 innings in which he allowed one walk and nothing else.

Stanford now awaits the winner of Illinois and Fullerton in the loser’s bracket. By winning on Saturday Stanford only needs to win one more game. Had they lost, Stanford would have had to win three more games to advance to the super regional.

The San Francisco Dons were handed their first loss of the 2011 NCAA baseball tournament as they lost to the UC Irvine Anteaters 4-3 following a furious attempted Dons rally in the ninth. The loss drops USF to 1-1 in the Los Angeles bracket and sets up a rematch with the UCLA Bruins in the loser’s bracket. UC Irvine advances to face the winner of the USF and UCLA Sunday evening.

Irvine jumped on top 1-0 in the third inning on a sacrifice fly by D.J. Crimlich. They added three more runs in the sixth inning on an RBI single by Brian Hernandez and a two-run home run by Drew Hillman. USF notched a run in the sixth on back-to-back wild pitches and that appeared to be it for them.

However, the Dons had one last rally attempt in them in the ninth inning. After Irvine starter Matt Whitehouse forced a ground out of Nik Balog, he allowed the next two runners to reach base in unforced situations. Whitehouse struck out Travis Higgs with a pitch in the dirt that allowed Higgs to reach first. Whitehouse then hit Adam Clear to put men on first and second.

The Anteaters brought in Brian Hernandez to face Matt Chavez. Chavez grounded to short but an error on the double play attempt allowed Higgs to score and Chavez to advance to second. Ted Lemasters then hit for Jason Mahood and proceeded to hit a 2-1 double to left center that scored Chavez and cut the lead to 4-3. The Anteaters brought in Jimmy Litchfield to pitch to Mason Morioka and Litchfield got the game-ending strikeout.

USF now finds itself in an elimination contest with the UCLA Bruins. USF knocked off UCLA on Friday to open the tournament and will need another upset if they’re going to stay alive. UCLA advanced in the loser’s bracket with a 3-1 victory over Fresno State that eliminated the Bulldogs. Five of the sixteen two seeds have been eliminated, with eight more one loss away from elimination.
