Sometimes when a few players get hot on a ball club, the rest of the team follows suit. And for the San Francisco Giants, the whole team got hot on a muggy night at Busch Stadium. Led by Aubrey Huff’s three home run night, the Giants out-homered the St. Louis Cardinals, eventually winning by a score of 12-7.

Huff’s 4-5 night also included a RBI single, while tying a career-high six RBI’s. It was Huff’s first time ever hitting 3 dingers in one game, and it was his fourth in the last two games; taking the team lead to eight on the year. Huff marks the first Giant to hit three homers in a game since J.T. Snow in August of 2004 against the Phillies.

Freddy Sanchez had been playing small ball very effectively as of late, but flashed some lumber tonight, hitting a three run jack in the seventh, his third of the year. His homer preceeded Huff’s second for back-to-back jacks for the G-Men, and finished with four RBI’s. Andres Torres accounted for the rest of the Giants offense, going 3-5 with two RBI’s.

Jonathan Sanchez (W 4-3) was erratic to start the night, but luckily the offense gift wrapped a win for him. Sanchez lasted for five and 1/3 innings this evening, allowing three runs off four hits, with six walks and only one strikeout. Jeremy Affeldt got his first save of the year for his two scoreless innings of work tonight, while Santiago Casilla pitched well in his third outing of the year thus far.

Luckily for the Cardinals Cody Rasmus’ night kept them in the game, going 2-5 with six RBI after a grand slam and a two RBI triple. Allen Craig also had an RBI double in the first, but it wasn’t enough against the Giants tonight. Rookie starter Lance Lynn (L 0-1) gave up five runs in 5 1/3 innings of work in his first start as a Cardinal, along with four hits and five strikeouts. The Giants took the series 3-1, only the first series loss for the Red Birds in their last 15 series.

With the win the Giants move to 31-25 on the year, and into a tie with the Diamondbacks for first place in the NL West. Full box score can be found here.

The Giants will finally head home Friday to begin a 10 game homestand, starting with a three game set with the Colorado Rockies. Matt Cain (3-4 3.88 ERA) will take the mound for the G-Men to face Juan Nicasio (1-0 0.00 ERA) for Colorado. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 p.m. PT with coverage on CSN Bay Area and KNBR 680 AM.

Thursday marks the conclusion of the San Francisco Giants’ four game set with the St. Louis Cardinals, as well as the end of their seven game road trip. The G-Men hand the ball to Jonathan Sanchez in hopes of finishing strong and get the series win, while the Cards send out a pitcher for his first major league start.

Sanchez (3-3 3.38 ERA) has pitched well in his last four starts, including a seven inning no decision against the Brewers last series as he held them to only two hits and one run. His walk numbers have been down lately as well, allowing eight in his last four starts compared to the 19 he had in his four starts before that. The Sanchize is 2-0 lifetime against the Red Birds with a 2.08 ERA in four carrer appearances.

As for the Cards, they’ll send out Lance Lynn, St. Louis’ 39th overall pick in the 2008 Draft. Lynn is filling in for Kyle McClellan, who currently sits on the disabled list with a strained left hip flexor. Lynn was with the AAA Memphis Red Birds before his promotion, sporting a 5-3 record and a 4.06 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 10 starts this season.

With the amount of call-ups on the Giants roster now, I’m sure someone has faced Lynn somewhere along the line, which likely will help a Giants team in need of a huge day at the plate. Hopefully Freddy Sanchez can continue his great streak, who is now batting .298 and has hit safely in 15 of his last 16 games after his 3-6 night on Wednesday. Brandon Crawford also has had a nice start as a major leaguer as he is currently 6-for-18 with one home run and six RBIs in his 21 plate appearances so far.

First pitch is set for 5:15 p.m. PT this evening with coverage on CSN Bay Area, MLB Network, and KNBR 680 AM.

Tim Lincecum has rarely had much trouble with the St. Louis Cardinals in his career thus far, and was looking to continue that tradition. But Timmy and the San Francisco Giants found themselves in a back-and-forth matchup at Busch Stadium tonight as Nate Schierholtz played hero not once but twice, leading to a dramatic 7-5 Giants win in 11 innings.

Lincecum allowed 10 hits to the Red Birds, capped by an Allen Craig pinch hit two run homer in the seventh to give St. Louis the lead, the first pinch hit homer ever given up by Lincecum in his career. The rest of the Cards’ runs came off of a pair of RBI singles and an unfortunate wild pitch by Timmy in the fourth. Lincecum still managed to ring up 9 Cards in his six and 1/3 innings of work, and finished without a walk.

The Giants knocked Jake Westbrook out of the game in the sixth, plating three runs off an RBI double from Cody Ross, an Eli Whiteside sacrifice fly, and an Andres Torres RBI double. Aubrey Huff launched his fifth homer of the season in the seventh, and the Giants tied up the game in the ninth off a Nate Schierholtz RBI single.

Then in the top of the 11th Nate Schierholtz was at it again, slapping an RBI double to right field to give the Giants the lead 6-5. Brandon Crawford followed it up with an RBI single to left to give the G-Men some extra insurance. Brian Wilson came in for the bottom of the inning, earning his 15th save of the year despite a bizarre twenty minute delay when a bank of lights went out in the stadium.

Full box score can be found here.

The Giants will conclude their series in St. Louis Thursday as Jonathan Sanchez (3-3 3.38 ERA) will take the mound to face Cardinals’ Lance Lynn in his first start of the season for the Red Birds. First pitch is set for 5:15 p.m. PT tomorrow with coverage on CSN Bay Area, MLB Network, and KNBR 680 AM.

The San Francisco Giants’ bullpen gave one away on Tuesday to the St. Louis Cardinals, but may have a chance to redeem themselves today. That is, of course, all dependent on how starter Tim Lincecum fares, who always is a threat to throw a complete game.

The Giants have now lost four of their last five games decided by one run after winning their last 10 consecutive one run games, but baseball always seems to even itself out like that. Needless to say, the G-Men need to score some runs, and hopefully the hottest bat on the team will come through for them today.

Freddy Sanchez has hit safely in 13 of his last 15 games played, sporting a .371 average over that span with six doubles and seven RBI’s. He’s also 7-17 against lefties, something that will hopefully play into the Giants hands today.

As for the lineup, Nate Schierholtz will be in right field batting fifth, Cody Ross will be in left batting sixth, while Brandon Crawford will get another start at shortstop, batting seventh.

After the San Francisco Giants suffered a late inning breakdown on Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals, the team will be looking for some retribution this afternoon at Busch Stadium. And luckily for the G-Men, They’ll be sending out Tim Lincecum, who is currently on a bit of a hot streak.

Lincecum (5-4 2.22 ERA) comes into St. Louis on a two game wining streak, and has some success against the Red Birds historically. The Freak is 5-1 with a 2.23 ERA in six starts lifetime against them, and in his four starts at Busch Stadium, Lincecum is 3-1 with a 2.30 ERA. The Cards offense, which has the highest on base percentage in all of base baseball at .349, hasn’t been beating the cover off the ball this series like they usually do, and could be a good time for Timmy’s turn in the rotation against them.

St. Louis will send Jake Westbrook (5-3 5.19 ERA) to the mound today, who is riding a three game win streak of his own. He shut down the Rockies potent offense in his last start, limiting them to three runs in five innings of work on only five hits. The Giants offense will need to jump on Westbrook early if they want to get a win.

First pitch is set for 5:15 p.m. PT with coverage on ESPN, CSN Bay Area, and KNBR 680 AM.

In today's matchup between the San Francisco Giants and the St. Louis Cardinals, rookie first baseman Brandon Belt went up to bat against Trever Miller. Miller proceeded to do what baseball pitchers tend to do from time to time--throw the ball awry and away from the strike zone. Belt proceeded to take a hit right on the left wrist and took first base, but would head to the clubhouse in the ninth when the swelling became too difficult for him to deal with. Emmanuel Burris had to come in to pinch-hit, and he proceeded to swing down

The X-rays show nothing damaging, meaning Belt should be ok, but it does become another casualty of the huge injury bug for the Giants to deal with. Are injuries really contagious? It's just your average day for the 2011 Giants.

The San Francisco Giants looked to be in control of the game for the majority of the evening tonight against the St. Louis Cardinals, but the Red Birds weren’t going down without a fight. St. Louis used a three run eighth inning to come from behind and take the lead, eventually winning by a score of 4-3 at Busch Stadium.

The Giants got on the board first with a Ryan Vogelsong RBI groundout in the second, which the Cards matched with a John Jay RBI single in the third. Freddy Sanchez gave the G-Men back the lead with an RBI single in the fifth, and a Cody Ross RBI single in the seventh.

Then the Red Birds’ bats awoke in the eighth, plating 3 runs off of four different Giants relievers to take the lead back 4-3, and eventually finished with the win saved by Fernando Salas in the ninth, his tenth on the year.

As for tonight’s pitchers Ryan Vogelsong pitched well in his five full innings of work, allowing only one run on six hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Javy Lopez (L 2-1) was tagged with his first loss of the year for his work in the eighth. As for the Cards, Chris Carpenter lasted for five innings as well, allowing two runs on seven hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. Ryan Franklin (W 1-3) was credited with the win, his first of the year.

The Giants left 11 runners on base and were only 2-15 with runners in scoring position. Rookie Brandon Crawford was the only Giants with multiple hits, going 2-4 with a double.

With the loss the Giants move to 29-25 on the year. Full box score can be found here.
