Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Cliff Pennington scored on Conor Jackson's high chopper in the 10th inning, boosting the Oakland Athletics to a 2-1 win over the Angels to avoid a three-game sweep.

After giving up a run in the bottom of the ninth, the A's went ahead in the 10th against Jordan Walden (0-1). Pennington tripled to left field. David DeJesus grounded back to the mound for the first out and Daric Bartonwas intentionally walked. Jackson then sent a high chopper to shortstop Erick Aybar, whose only play was to first base.

Brad Ziegler retired the side in order in the bottom of the 10th to get his first save of the year. Brian Fuentes(1-2), who blew the lead in the ninth, got the win.

Oakland starter Tyson Ross, making his second start of the season, allowed four hits, walked one and had three strikeouts over seven innings. The right- hander lost to Seattle on his 24th birthday last Friday.

Bobby Abreu doubled in the only run for Los Angeles, which lost for the fifth time in seven contests.

Dan Haren pitched masterfully, as he yielded just three hits and fanned five while walking a pair of batters over seven frames. The only run he allowed was unearned as a fielding error from Howie Kendrick led to the game's first score.

There was controversy in the bottom of the ninth. Fuentes came on to try and close it out for the A's. Pinch-hitter Maicer Izturis grounded a ball to third baseman Kevin Kouzmanoff, whose bobble led to his sixth error of the season. Fuentes then hit Aybar with a pitch on the right knee. Home plate umpire Tim Timmons appealed to Jeff Kellogg at first base, and the ruling was changed to a foul ball. Replays clearly showed Aybar pulled his bat back and the ball hitting him on the knee and never striking the bat.

Aybar then put down a successful sacrifice bunt. Abreu was up next and doubled down the left field line on a 3-2 pitch to tie the game. Torii Hunter was intentionally walked, but Fuentes fanned Vernon Wells and retiredAlberto Callaspo on a pop-up to send the game to the 10th.

Landon Powell walked to start the top of the third. Kouzmanoff then reached safely on Kendrick's gaffe. Pennington fouled out, but DeJesus was hit by a pitch to load the bases before Barton lifted a sacrifice fly to left field.

The Angels plated 13 runs on 24 hits over first two games of this series...Oakland went 0-for-11 with runners in scoring position...The Angels had won eight in a row at home over the A's.

The Oakland Athletics enter Wednesday afternoon’s ESPN Game of the Week face the daunting task of trying to escape with a win against Angels starter Dan Haren. The A’s have been manhandled through the first two games of the series and send out spot starter Tyson Ross trying to salvage anything. Ross was roughed up in his first start of the year last week and will look to show improvement this week. As Dallas Braden works his way back from shoulder stiffness, Ross has a limited opportunity to prove himself over the next week or two.

The A’s will have a temporary change to their lineup over the next few days as Landon Powell will be filling in for Kurt Suzuki. The A’s placed Suzuki on their paternity leave list, which allows a player to be on hand for the birth of a child. The A’s called up Josh Donaldson to fill Suzuki’s roster spot while he is gone. Donaldson was struggling at AAA and I would imagine Powell will get just about all the starts while Suzuki is out.

The only other significant change is that Coco Crisp is out of the lineup, replaced by Ryan Sweeney in center and David DeJesus at the top of the lineup. Crisp left Tuesday’s game with quad tightness and with the off-day on Thursday, a Wednesday day off makes sense. Josh Willingham will miss his second straight game with back tightness, leaving a fairly hot-hitting Conor Jackson in left field.

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Peter Bourjos tripled twice and finished with three of the Angels' 16 hits, which they used to push past the Athletics, 8-3, in the middle contest of a three-game series.

Howie Kendrick finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs scored for the Angels, who claimed a 5-0 victory in Monday's opener. They were swept in four games against Boston prior to this series.

But Los Angeles won its second in a row thanks to the deluge of hits, which included seven for extra bases.Alexi Amarista smacked a two-run double and added a sacrifice fly in his major league debut.

It was plenty of support for the Halos' pitching staff. Rookie starter Tyler Chatwood (2-1) allowed three runs in 5 1/3 innings, while Francisco Rodriguez, Fernando Rodney and Jordan Walden held Oakland scoreless the rest of the way.

Oakland never had the chance to put the game in its bullpen's hands, after starter Brandon McCarthy (1-2) gave up seven runs and 14 hits in 5 1/3 frames. He had allowed seven earned runs in his first four starts combined.

The Oakland Athletics send resurgent starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy as they look to get back to the .500 mark once again. McCarthy is pitching as well as anybody in the rotation as he has a 2.10 ERA and a 1.00 WHIP. He’s gotten a mixed bag of run support, which is why he sits at 1-1 through four starts. McCarthy has a long way to go to prove he is completely back from the injuries that have dogged him in recent years. However, if he can stay healthy the entire season he could easily work his way into the running for comeback player of the year.

McCarthy will square off against Tyler Chatwood of the Los Angeles Angels. Chatwood was a second round pick for the Angels in 2008 and made a quick run through their farm system. He’s made three starts thus far at the major league level with some measure of success. His K/BB ratio is not pretty, but he’s escaped significant damage for the most part lately. We’ll see if the A’s can jump on him early.

The Oakland Athletics came into Monday’s matchup with the Los Angeles Angels still trying to figure out their offensive identity. Although they had scored 14 runs over their previous two games, they had played with great inconsistency on offense during the previous 20 games. Having to face the best pitcher in baseball right now did not help them solve their problems.

Jered Weaver spun a seven hit shutout as he improved to 6-0 and boosted his MLB lead in several categories. He lowered his ERA to an MLB-leading 0.99 and struck out ten to improve to an MLB-leading 49 strikeouts on the season. In giving up seven hits and one walk he actually boosted his WHIP to 0.79, which is still tied for fourth best in the majors. All in all, it’s hard to say anybody is pitching as well as Jered Weaver.

The A’s fell behind the eight ball fairly quickly in the contest as the Angels jumped on top 2-0 in the third. Gio Gonzalez struggled for the second straight outing, giving up five runs (four earned) over five innings. He kept his walk total down again (one BB), but gave up eight hits as well as the Angels had little trouble making contact all game long.

The A’s did get some offense as Coco Crisp was 3-for-4 and Hideki Matsui was 2-for-4, but they could never get anything significant going as they only got runners to third three times over the course of the evening.

The A’s and Angels return tomorrow night at 7:05pm on CSN California. Brandon McCarthy will face off against Tyler Chatwood as the A’s look to even this three game set at one game apiece.

The A’s scored 14 runs in the final two games against Seattle and now face a pitcher in Weaver who is pitching as well as anybody in baseball. Weaver is sitting at 5-0 with a 1.23 ERA and 0.76 WHIP. For those keeping count, that puts him on pace for upwards of 36 wins. I don’t think he’ll be winning 36 games, but it’s safe to say he could not be pitching a whole lot better.

The A’s send out Gio Gonzalez who will be looking to bounce back from his first poor performance of the season last Wednesday. He gave up four runs to the Boston Red Sox and suffered his first defeat of the season. He will be facing an Angels lineup that has been around the middle of the pack in terms of offense. Maicer Izturis is leading the way with a line of .338/.384/.500. Howie Kendrick has wielded the big stick thus far with six home runs on the season.

The Oakland Athletics open up a three game series with the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, followed by four games at home against the Texas Rangers. While it's only late April at this point, every game will be important in the A's hunt to win the American League West title. If the division title comes down to one or two games, these seven games in April are just as important as late September games.

As things currently stand, the A's are 11, sitting 3 1/2 games back of the Rangers for first place and a game back of the Angels for second place. Oakland is 3 1/2 games up on the Mariners after splitting four games with Seattle this past weekend. The A's also sit a mere one game back in the wild card race, with Detroit, Kansas City and Los Angeles sitting in first there. The wild card race is not something anybody gets too excited about in April. Positioning is nice, but the wild card race won't really heat up until probably after the All Star Break.

For now, the A's have a chance to gain important positioning within their own division. If they can four or five of the next seven games, they'll be in a solid position at the start of May.

The Oakland Athletics head down to Anaheim to face the Los Angeles of said Anaheim in an important three game series. It's hard to describe much of anything as "important" when you've only played 13.5% of the season. However, given how close the AL West race could be in late September, every divisional game is important. Games may "feel" more important in September, but every game is worth the same amount, whether it's game 33 or game 162.

The series features some quality pitching, although it remains to be seen how the A's current fifth starter, Tyson Ross will fare against one of the two Angels aces, Dan Haren. In looking over the matchups, I would not be stunned to see the A's only win one of three, as Weaver and Haren have a likely advantage in their matchups. Oakland's offense has been strong the last two games, but it's one thing to do that against the likes of Doug Fister and Jason Vargas. As the A's showed the previous two nights, it's entirely different against dominant pitchers like Felix Hernandez and Michael Pineda. It will be interesting to see if the A's are able to continue their strong showing against the likes of Weaver and Haren. That would be a true test of the where the A's offense stands.

All three A's-Angels games will be on TV, with the Wednesday late afternoon game featured on ESPN. The TV schedule for this weekend is as follows (all times pacific):

Monday - 7:05pm, CSN California
Tuesday - 7:05pm, CSN California
Wednesday - 4:05pm, CSN California/ESPN
