Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Ryane Clowe tied the game late in regulation and scored the lone shootout goal, as the San Jose Sharks rallied to beat the Calgary Flames, 4-3, at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Clowe came off the boards and took a pass from Patrick Marleau before firing a wrister past Calgary's Miikka Kiprusoff on the blocker side with 2:34 remaining in the third period.

Then, in the third round of the shootout, Clowe beat Kiprusoff on a backhand- forehand deke. Antti Niemi turned away Olli Jokinen to assure the extra point for the Pacific Division leaders.

Devin Setoguchi and Kyle Wellwood also lit the lamp for San Jose, which notched its sixth straight win to finish February with an 11-2-0 record. Niemi made 21 saves through overtime.

Anton Babchuk, David Moss and Niklas Hagman scored for the Flames, who have dropped four of their last seven games. Kiprusoff stopped 30 shots in defeat.

Setoguchi followed up his own shot to open the scoring 3:34 into the contest. Calgary pulled even on Babchuk's marker with 1:55 to play in the first period.

Wellwood made it 2-1 at 9:37 of the second, but Moss and Hagman scored 1:36 apart later in the frame to give the Flames a 3-2 lead.

Moss let go a slap shot from the right circle at 15:54, then Hagman stick-handled around a defender and roofed the puck at 17:30.

The Sharks improved to 21-11-3 on the road this season...San Jose had lost four of its last six games in Calgary.

(Sports Network) - No Sharks rookie had scored 25 goals since the club's inaugural 1991-92 season beforeLogan Couture hit the mark on Wednesday. The freshman skater will try to help San Jose maintain its Pacific Division lead with a sixth straight victory tonight in a meeting with the Calgary Flames at the Saddledome.

Couture snapped a seven-game goal drought in Wednesday's 3-2 overtime victory over the Penguins, becoming the first Sharks rookie to tally 25 goals since Pat Falloon in 1991-92. Couture, who does have six assists over his last four games, is tied with the Islanders' Michael Grabner for the most goals among rookies.

The 21-year-old also assisted on Patrick Marleau's second goal of the contest on Wednesday, the game-winner with just four seconds left in overtime. The tally came a minute after Marleau was stopped on a breakaway and helped the Sharks gain two points despite giving up the game-tying tally with just 50 ticks left in regulation.

"I think it shows that we can persevere when things like that happen," said Marleau. "Of course you don't want that to happen, but it did and I think we responded well to it."

Antti Niemi made 24 saves as the Sharks won a season-high five straight for the second time this month and are 14-2-1 in their past 17 games. That has helped San Jose take a one-point lead over Phoenix for first-place in the Pacific Division. The Coyotes visit the Blue Jackets this evening.

San Jose has won the first two contests of a three-game swing as well as three straight and seven of their last nine on the road.

Couture had a goal and two assists when the Sharks hosted the Flames on Nov. 13, claiming a 4-3 win and avenging a 4-0 shutout loss in Calgary on Oct. 24. All told, the two clubs have split their last 10 meetings and San Jose has lost four of its last six in Calgary.

The Flames play the third contest of a five-game homestand tonight and are one of five teams with 70 points and tied for the Western Conference's last three playoff spots. Calgary took the first two of its homestand before Tuesday's 3-1 setback to Boston.

Miikka Kiprusoff made 26 saves and Curtis Glencross had the lone goal to run his point streak to eight straight games. The forward has amassed seven goals and five assists in that span, but couldn't prevent the Flames from losing at home in regulation for the first time in 10 games (7-1-2).

"We never capitalized on some opportunities and hit a couple posts," said Flames head coach Brent Sutter. "It was one of those nights it just didn't happen the way we would've liked it to."

Kiprusoff posted a 27-save shutout in Calgary's home win over San Jose in October and is 8-4-0 in 12 career home starts versus the Sharks with a 2.33 goals-against average.

Niemi is 4-1-0 with a 2.48 GAA in his career versus the Flames.

Detroit, MI (Sports Network) - Devin Setoguchi scored two goals, including the game-winning tally in the third period, as the San Jose Sharks held on for a 4-3 victory against the Detroit Red Wings.

Ryane Clowe and Joe Thornton also lit the lamp for San Jose, which has won four in a row and prevented the Red Wings from winning a sixth consecutive game.

Thornton's goal was the 300th of his career, and he added two assists. Antti Niemi made 35 saves in the victory.

Danny Cleary tallied twice for Detroit, while Jimmy Howard let in four goals on 43 shots.

"They played well, we didn't play great at all," Cleary said. "We had some chances offensively, but I think defensively we were too loose."

With the score tied late in the second period, Setoguchi netted his first.

Thornton enabled the tally after leading a San Jose rush into the Red Wings' end and dishing to the left circle forLogan Couture, who blasted a shot that Howard stopped. Thornton picked up the rebound by the left post, then circled behind the net before passing out front for Setoguchi's stuff-in with 1:17 remaining.

That goal gave the Sharks a 3-2 edge, and Setoguchi made it a two-goal edge late in the third.

Thornton was again central to the play, passing from the right boards to the slot for Setoguchi's blazing slap shot with 6:48 on the clock.

"He's skating real well," Thornton said of Setoguchi, who had a hat trick in Saturday's win against Colorado. "He's getting to goal-scorers' spots and he's finishing. So we'd like for him to stay hot like this because it's a real luxury for us."

Henrik Zetterberg netted a power-play goal with 1:51 to go, bringing the Red Wings within one, but Niemi was strong the rest of the way to secure the victory.

The Sharks got on the board with 7.4 seconds left in the first period, when Thornton backhanded in a rebound during a power play.

Cleary scored by the right post at the 7:06 mark of the second, though Clowe's breakaway tally at 14:08 restored San Jose's lead. But only 34 seconds later, Cleary jammed in the puck by the left post to even the contest.

San Jose opened a three-game road trip that includes stops in Pittsburgh (Wednesday) and Calgary (Friday)...The Sharks have won three consecutive regular season games in Detroit. They also swept the season series in Detroit for the first time in team history...Cleary has a career-high 21 goals this season.

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Devin Setoguchi recorded his first career hat trick and Antti Niemi recorded his fifth shutout of the season, leading San Jose in a 4-0 rout of Colorado at HP Pavilion.

Niemi made 25 saves for the Sharks, who have won three in a row after dropping two straight. Ryane Clowe also lit the lamp in the victory.

Peter Budaj allowed four goals on 33 shots for the Avalanche, whose losing streak reached 10 games (0-9-1).

Setoguchi registered two goals in the first period.

The first came 6 1/2 minutes in, when he split two defenders and used a backhand to beat Budaj. His second made it a 2-0 game with five minutes left in the opening period, when he cleaned up a big rebound off the backboards during a power play.

Just over 1 1/2 minutes after Setoguchi's second goal, Clowe got into the scoring for the Sharks, with a wrister from the left circle on the man advantage.

Following a scoreless second period, Setoguchi completed his hat trick in the third period with a breakaway goal.

Colorado couldn't get on the board, despite getting 11 shots on net in the middle frame. Niemi then made six saves in the final 20 minutes to preserve the win and his shutout.

After much begging and pleading from the fanbase and much lecturing from pundits everywhere, the San Jose Sharks have finally taken steps to bolster their roster of defensemen. The team has sent a 2012 second round pick to the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for the talented defenseman, Ian White. The Sharks also sent Derek Joslin along as part of the deal.

It's a good price for White, who does a little of everything but fits especially well into the hole that former captain Rob Blake left when he retired before the 2010-2011 season. Even when the team had Blake on ice, they were considered weak defensively and survived for the most part due to the fan favorite goalie Evgeni Nabokov. This past offseason, they lost both "Nabby" and Blake, while doing virtually nothing in free agency to address the latter need for the immediate future.

White's presence will bolster the defensive units and make the power play better throughout its lines, especially when he's able to give Dan Boyle a rest. He's good enough offensively to make a difference, and has a tendency to put a high volume of pucks at the net, a la the aforementioned Boyle. He hasn't been an offensive juggernaut this season with just two goals and fourteen assists, but he did hint at some issues with the Carolina coaching staff.

So maybe Todd McLellan can utilize him more effectively to bring out some offensive power, or perhaps he'll simply be there for his defense and nothing more, which would alone merit the second-round pick and the aforementioned Joslin.

Fear The Fin had a great breakdown earlier today and said much more than I could while in the middle of other things, so head on over there and check out what they've got to say.

The tone is a bit different from last week's San Jose Sharks stream, but it's still better than the tone of many before it. It's been a season marred by inconsistencies and uncertainty, as covered in the recent midseason report, but a recent hot streak has put them in a much better place in the standings - with the NHL and their fanbase. Fans are beginning to ease up on the talk of potentially missing the playoffs, and are once again considering what it would mean to be a top three seed or which matchups one would like to avoid early on in said playoffs. It's an easy mode to revert to for Sharks fans who may be a little spoiled.

But it really isn't smooth sailing from here, and wasn't last week. After posting a five-game win streak in which they thoroughly beat two divisional rivals in the Anaheim Ducks and Phoenix Coyotes in offensive-oriented games, the Sharks went just 1-2-0 last week. Both losses were hard-fought affairs that just didn't seem to go the Sharks way as the length of their seven-game road trip began to wear on them.

Their most recent outing was their last win, a 2-1 overtime affair over the Nashville Predators. Patrick Marleau scored the game winner in overtime, taking the puck from the neutral zone and beating Pekka Rinne one-on-one. Devin Setoguchi also scored for the Sharks, and it's a wonder the score was so low. The Sharks unleashed an offensive onslaught with fifty shots put on Rinne for the night. As a contrast, the Sharks' Antti Niemi stopped 30-of-31 to go his way.

San Jose has a two-game homestand against the Washington Capitals and the Colorado Avalanche before taking to the road once again to the notorious Joe Louis arena to take on the Detroit Red Wings. They're right in the thick of things, and wins over these foes would be great for them going forward.

The duration of this stream will carry us through these aforementioned three games with previews, news, recaps and more. Stay tuned to this stream and follow @sbnbayarea to keep updated on all things Sharks for the next seven days.
