With the trade deadline coming close, Golden State Warriors beat writer Marcus Thompson II and San Jose Mercury Sports contributor Tim Kawakami chat with Warriors fans over the fate of their backcourt conundrum. From the looks of it, both of them are seem to think that replacing Monta Ellis may be easier than trying to replace Curry. And both Thompson II and Kawakami are in agreement that what they realistically think they could get in return for Curry if they’re expecting to get that dominant big man they’ve always wanted.

Here’s what they Thompson II and Kawakami had to Tweet about today:

gswscribe Marcus Thompson
@timkawakami Problem is, you can trade a SG for any position. Do you trade a PG for anything but a big?

gswscribe Marcus Thompson
He has really good vision. Handles well in traffic. He is inexperienced and lacking athletically @HowardKushlan

gswscribe Marcus Thompson
He must play PG. Doesn’t have size/athleticism for combo RT @timkawakami: But do you really consider Curry a PG? his future is as combo 1/2.

gswscribe Marcus Thompson
Point guard is the most difficult position on the court. You can’t just put anybody at PG. Those dudes are rare

gswscribe Marcus Thompson
That is why when you get one that is good, especially one with a special talent, you don’t just walk away from it because of the flaws

gswscribe Marcus Thompson
I said the same things when the Warriors had Baron. You just don’t walk away from good point guards. Good franchises don’t, anyway

So the battle rages on! But Thompson II seems to think that trading Curry might set the Warriors back. There was an additional Tweet by Thompson II about how all young point guards take time to develop (Jrue Holiday, Darren Collison, and Brandon Jennings) with the exception being Chris Paul. But anyway, Thompson, to me, brings up a good point, no pun intended, which I will extrapolate on.

If you trade Curry, who’s going to bring the ball up court. Or rather, who has the ability, in pressure situations, to bring the ball up court without getting picked? During the Don Nelson and Baron Davis years, Davis was called upon to facilitate a huge portion of the offense because, honestly, no one else had the handles or court vision to do what he did. Before that, the Warriors hadn’t had a point guard with that ability to lead a team since Tim Hardaway. Curry isn’t an elite point guard by any means, yet. But finding someone with his skills does seem pretty difficult to duplicate considering what the market is out there for point guards when we can’t even get a decent back-up.

With that said, be careful what you wish for.

In the last five games, amidst the most All-Star reserve talk ever, Monta Ellis shot exactly 33% while averaging a paltry 18 points per game. For most shooting guards, 18 points a game is a fair clip. But when you’ve been anointed the face of the franchise by you’re team owner and putting up shots at a rate that only Andray Blatche would duplicate, you’re struggling.

In the midst of this four-game losing streak, which can’t be solely be attributed to Monta Ellis’ poor play, the other guard, Stephen Curry has been playing like we all expected him to. In the complete opposite fashion, Curry is shooting better than 50% and scoring 24 points a game. In fact, one could go so far as to say that yesterday’s game against the Utah Jazz allowed us to see how ball movement could possibly improve with Curry at the helm. Five Warriors were in double figures last night and you hadn’t seen this many Warriors touch AND shoot the ball since possibly late last season when Curry officially went bananas on the NBA scene.

Perhaps it's too early to read much into this given how their meltdown versus the Bobcats was a collective issue. But Coach Keith Smart thinks Monta Ellis’ stinker last night (2 points on 1 of 9 shooting) was a sign of maturation:

“That’s the growth of him,” Smart said. “Not trying to force the issue, to make it happen. He allowed himself to be a decoy because he’s still a threat.”

But was it really a wily veteran in Raja Bell that caused Monta’s frustrations? As the ESPN broadcast reported, Monta’s scoreless first half hasn’t happened since 2006.

Is Monta’s deferral reflective of more signs to come or perhaps a happy compromise? Tim Kawakami discusses what he says is the issue is with a “duplicative” scoring backcourt:

Ellis played more than 31 minutes, took 9 shots, missed 8 of them, but did have 5 assists and 4 rebounds and looked to be playing so pretty solid defense.
…
But my general point stands: You only usually need ONE guard to score heavy points, and if that guy doesn’t play much defense, you very much need the other guard to play D and do the support stuff.

When you have TWO offensive-minded guards, it’s a little duplicative–you’re probably going to get a lot of those points anyway, as long as you have one premier perimeter scorer.

It’s difficult to read what’s happening with Monta, but body language suggests he’s unhappy about something. Not normally a talkative guy on the court anyway, Monta’s attitude has changed recently, showing him smiling after hitting game-winners. Slapping fives with teammates after good plays. Pumping a fist Kobe Bryant-style when Curry nails an open three. But last night we saw Monta playing tough defense, doing what he had to do, and not looking very happy about it. For huge stretches, Monta didn’t touch the ball but the Warriors were scoring. He seemed to force the issue a bit on a few drives and was not in the congratulatory mood with his teammates. He just didn’t seem connected, to say the least.

Whether it is something to worry about, it’s still unclear. And maybe Monta Ellis will sacrifice shots to be THAT dude that plays defense on a defenseless starting five. But with the trade deadline looming and Lacob wanting to score himself a superstar, perhaps some moves will eventually settle this 1.5 year debate of who is the future of this franchise going forward.

The Utah Jazz had no Deron Williams and no Mehmet Okur, and with Paul Millsap and Al Jefferson struggling to produce, an underwhelming performance at Oracle Arena seemed inevitable. The Golden State Warriors pulled away in the third quarter and cruised to an uncharacteristically comfortable victory, snapping their three game losing streak at home with a 96-81 victory; Utah has now lost seven of their last eight games and are starting to find themselves slip out of the top of the conference.

Stephen Curry led the Warriors with 27 points, seven assists and six rebounds, Dorell Wright chipped in with 16 points; Reggie Williams had 15 points, and David Lee had 14 points and 5 rebounds. Monta Ellis was uncharacteristically quiet, not scoring a single point in the first half, but the Warriors didn’t need his services offensively tonight to beat the Jazz; it was his defense that surprisingly set the tone and kept Golden State on task, as they led by double digits for most of the fourth quarter.

(Sports Network) – Utah managed to halt its longest losing streak of the season without Deron Williams. Now, the Jazz will hope to start their latest winning streak in Oakland against the reeling Golden State Warriors with or without their star guard. Williams, who is struggling with a hyperextended right wrist, will be a game- time decision tonight as Utah attempts to halt a five-game road slide.

With Williams on the sidelines Friday Paul Millsap notched 30 points, Andrei Kirilenko scored a season-high 27 and the Jazz snapped a six-game skid with a 108-100 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves at EnergySolutions Arena. Millsap, despite a bruised thumb, added eight rebounds and a season-high six steals for Utah, which got 22 points from C.J. Miles in a reserve role. Earl Watson had 10 points and a season-high 13 assists in place of Williams.

“When you’ve lost six straight, the most important thing is we won the game. I thought our guys really played hard,” said Utah head coach Jerry Sloan.

The Warriors, meanwhile, fell to 0-3 on a season-long eight-game homestand on Friday when Charlotte’s Stephen Jackson scored 31 points, including a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining to force overtime, as the Bobcats rallied to beat Golden State, 121-113. Stephen Curry had 27 points to pace the Warriors, who have dropped four in a row overall. Monta Ellis scored 21 points on 6-of-24 shooting, while Dorell Wright also finished with 21 points in the loss.

“We had a chance to win the game and we didn’t,” Curry said. “It’s really frustrating when we play hard. It’s not like our effort was the reason we lost. We just had lapses where we couldn’t rebound, gave up too many baskets down low and we let them back in the game.”

Utah has won four of its past five meetings with Golden State.

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) – Stephen Jackson scored 31 points, including a three-pointer with 1.9 seconds remaining to force overtime, as the Charlotte Bobcats rallied to beat the Golden State Warriors, 121-113, at Oracle Arena. D.J. Augustin posted 27 points and 12 assists for the Bobcats, who improved to 3-0 on their six-game road trip. Boris Diaw and Nazr Mohammed both netted 13 points for Charlotte, which overcame a 16-point deficit late in the third quarter.

Stephen Curry had 27 points to pace the Warriors, who have dropped four in a row. Monta Ellis scored 21 points on 6-of-24 shooting, while Dorell Wright also finished with 21 points in the loss. Ellis knocked down a trey to give Golden State a seemingly comfortable 76-60 lead with 2:37 left in the third quarter. Charlotte ended the frame on an 11-0 run and closed to within 83-82 on a pair of Gerald Henderson free throws midway through the fourth quarter.

A thunderous dunk by Wright put the Warriors up 100-95 with 27.8 seconds remaining, but the Bobcats refused to go away. Jackson was fouled behind the arc and made all three attempts from the charity stripe. After Ellis made 1-of-2 free throws, Gerald Wallace missed a three-pointer at the other end. Augustin, though, secured the offensive rebound and dished to Jackson, who sank his long-range jumper near the end of regulation.

Jackson buried a turnaround jumper to begin the extra frame, giving Charlotte its first lead since early in the first quarter. With the teams knotted at 105-105, Augustin hit a pullup jumper to ignite a 7-0 burst. Golden State trimmed its deficit to four on two occasions, the last coming at 117-113 with 38.6 seconds left, but Augustin converted four free throws to seal the win.

“We had a chance to win the game and we didn’t,” Curry said. “It’s really frustrating when we play hard. It’s not like our effort was the reason we lost. We just had lapses where we couldn’t rebound, gave up too many baskets down low and we let them back in the game.”

The Warriors led 28-22 after the opening 12 minutes and maintained their six- point advantage at halftime.

Charlotte has won five of its last six games overall…The Warriors fell to 0-3 on their eight-game homestand…The Bobcats have won three straight in Oakland.

(Sports Network) – The Charlotte Bobcats will try to stay perfect on their six-game road trip when they visit the Golden State Warriors tonight at Oracle Arena. The Bobcats have beaten Sacramento and Phoenix so far on the trek and are coming off Wednesday’s 114-107 victory over the Suns in the desert. Stephen Jackson had 23 points and seven rebounds, Gerald Wallace supplied 22 points and 10 boards and Boris Diaw collected 18 points, six rebounds and five assists for Charlotte, winners in eight of its last 12 games.

Head coach Paul Silas improved to 10-6 since taking over for Larry Brown in late December. Charlotte was 9-19 over the season’s first 28 games.

“I think his (head coach Paul Silas) demeanor, his style, the way he coaches, he always tells us everything is alright,” Wallace said. “I think the calmer the coaches are, that makes us out on the court calmer. We didn’t panic. They made some shots but we stuck to our principles and we were able to come out with a win tonight.”

Charlotte will also visit the Clippers, Jazz and Pistons, and is 7-14 away from Time Warner Cable Arena this season. It has won three straight as the visitor. Golden State has lost three in a row since winning four straight and fell to 0-2 on an eight-game homestand with Wednesday’s 112-103 setback versus the New Orleans Hornets in Oakland.

Monta Ellis and Dorell Wright scored 26 and 25 points, respectively, for the Warriors, who are 13-9 at home and got 20 points and six assists from Stephen Curry. David Lee added 16 points and 10 boards in defeat.

“They came out ready to play and they out worked us in the first quarter,” Wright said. “I think they started out 14 of 18 and you are not going to win games when a team is shooting like that. We were careless with the ball and missed some key shots. But, they are a good team and there is a reason they in the midst of 10-game winning streak.”

The Warriors are slated to host Utah, Milwaukee, Chicago, Phoenix and Denver on the current residency. Golden State beat Charlotte, 96-95, in the first meeting of the season between the teams on Dec. 31 at Time Warner Cable Arena. Ellis’ layup with 1:20 remaining proved to be the difference and he ended with 25 points and five assists. Wright had 17 points in that one.

The Warriors lost their third in a row — at home — and a red-hot New Orleans Hornets team shot a ridiculous (even for the NBA) 62% from the field. In what is supposed to be the time where the Warriors play catch-up and make a strong push to get into a final playoff spot, you would have thought after yesterday’s game you were watching the NBA All-Star Game by how poorly the Warriors defended. CSN Bay Area’s Matt Steinmetz reads into locker room body language after last night’s game, suggesting that problems are possibly arise:

But what now? There will always be ups and downs with this Warriors squad as we’ve witnessed all season. But with Lacob seemingly having everyone on a short leash, you can bet he wants to avoid starting his tenure the same way that former Chris Cohan experienced his. That being, Lacob doesn’t want a mutiny or a civil war amongst its players.

It’s too early to say what Lacob’s going to do, but given the problematic effort and execution, what do you want Lacob to do?

Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - David West's 22 points led a balanced attack in New Orleans' 112-103 victory over Golden State at ORACLE Arena.

Trevor Ariza notched 19 points and seven rebounds, while Chris Paul scored 18 and dished out 17 assists for the Hornets, who have won 10 straight games.
Emeka Okafor and Marco Belinelli had 13 and 11 points, respectively, for the victors.

Monta Ellis recorded 26 points and five assists and Dorell Wright notched 25 points for the Warriors, who have lost three in the row. Stephen Curry posted 20 points and six assists and David Lee added 16 points and 10 boards.

The Hornets shot 65.2 percent during the first quarter to jump out to a 34-21 lead. They ended the night hitting a season-high 62.2 percent of their shots en route to a season-high 112 points.

Golden State was able to cut the lead down to three with 6:33 left to play in the opening half from Wright's drive and finger roll. But New Orleans built back a sizable lead and took 61-49 edge at halftime.

The visitors' edge was cut to four in the third quarter thanks to an 8-0 Warriors' run capped by Curry's long two-pointer with 8:35 remaining to make it 65-61.
