After automatically qualifying for the BCS by finishing in the top four of college football's most important ranking, the Stanford Cardinal were selected by the Orange Bowl in Sun Life Stadium to face the Virginia Tech Hokies. The game will be on January 3rd at 8:30 PM ET/5:30 PM PT on ESPN.

Stanford became an attractive choice thanks to having the potential number one pick in the 2011 NFL Draft and likely Heisman finalist Andrew Luck. Also, Jim Harbaugh will be the hottest coaching prospect and is likely to be up for a lot of potential offerings from both college and NFL programs, and it'll be a definite source of interest to bring in the TV ratings. Since the Connecticut Huskies won't be a distinctively higher draw in ticket sales, it became elementary for the Orange Bowl to pick Stanford.

They'll be facing the Virginia Tech Hokies, who haven't lost since starting the season 0-2 with losses to the Boise St. Broncos and James Madison. Virginia Tech finished the season on an eleven game winning streak, sweeping the ACC and capping off with a 44-33 victory over the Florida St. Seminoles in their conference championship game.

It's still unclear where the Stanford Cardinal will be playing next week. The Fiesta Bowl in Glendale and the Orange Bowl in Miami are the most likely destinations.

Stanford fans have made it clear their preference. Pretty much the whole fanbase, a proud 142 Cardinal fans strong, are stating the destination they desire!

The Orange Bowl must choose between Stanford and UConn.

By threatening NOT to travel to Miami for the Orange Bowl, we're asking the Orange Bowl Committee to choose UConn instead.

That would put Stanford in the Fiesta Bowl vs. Oklahoma. We want a REMATCH!!

This is a better situation for Stanford fans, distance-wise, game-wise and national exposure-wise!!!

Uhh, ok, Stanford fans. A couple of things wrong with that.

Prestige: You do realize the Orange Bowl is tied for the second-oldest bowl in the entire system (along with the Sugar and the Sun Bowls).

Game-wise: Beating up on a Oklahoma squad might not be that impressive this year as shutting down a Virginia Tech team on an eleven game winning streak. The Hokies went undefeated in the ACC after losing to Boise State and James Madison. The Sooners got shut down by Texas A&M and fell apart in Missouri in a pretty down year in the Big 12.

Distance-wise: You went to Stanford. Aren't you rich enough to afford the ticket? Also, why exactly would you prefer the cosy confines of Miami in January over the stuffy and boring horizons of the greater Phoenix area?

Oh well. I'm sure you'll adjust yourself to the idea of taking your talents to South Beach soon enough.

Tonight the Bowl Championship Series folks will make the official announcement as to which teams will be going to which BCS Bowls. Once the computers and polls are all tallied up, we'll have the final BCS standings of the 2010 NCAA football regular season. At that point we'll officially know what has been speculated about all season long.

We already have a fairly decent idea of who will be going to what bowls as information leaks out. Some teams are known because of automatic bids, but even the at-large candidates seem fairly settled. The Rose Bowl would appear settled to be a Wisconsin-TCU affair. It's not a traditional Big Ten/Pac-10 matchup, but it should be a fun matchup.

Beyond that there are a lot of questions about which teams will end up where. The Sugar Bowl gets the first two choices because of their rotation and also the loss of Auburn to the national title game. Our very own Stanford Cardinal will end up in a BCS bowl, but concerns about their ability to sell their ticket allotment will drop them to either the Orange Bowl or the Fiesta Bowl. The folks in Miami have a tough choice to make between a fairly weak BCS conference winner in the formerly 1-AA Connecticut Huskies and a fairly dominant Pac-10 team in Stanford that might not sell its tickets.

On the one hand, UConn apparently is considered more likely to sell out their tickets. On the other hand, it seems like Stanford versus Virginia Tech would draw better ratings given Stanford's location in the Bay Area. It all comes down to money and the Orange Bowl folks are likely just looking at what will net them more money. I suppose image counts as well, but when you're a BCS bowl already I don't think image is a major concern.

If Stanford is passed over by the Orange Bowl, they'll face Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl. Whichever bowl they are selected to, we'll be here all the way up through the game with plenty of coverage.
