Recap of Friday Night’s Western Conference Action:

Houston 89 @ Charlotte 99

The Bobcats used a third quarter rally to hand the Rockets their 5th loss in the last 6 games. Gerald Wallace (21 pts, 14 rebs) and Boris Diaw (20 pts, 10 rebs) double-doubled for the Bobcats, while Chase Budinger led the Rockets in scoring with 19 points off the bench. Kevin Martin and Luis Scola, Houston’s top scorers, combined for 27 points but did so on 10-for-28 shooting from the field (.357) and 4-for-10 shooting from the line. Shane Battier also had an off night, going 1-for-9 from the field for 2 points.

Oklahoma City 110 @ Indiana 106 (OT)

Russell Westbrook went off for 43 points, 8 rebounds, and 8 assists to lead the Thunder to their 8th win in their last 10 games. Throughout the night, Kevin Durant’s shot was off, as he finished with 25 points on 9-for-26 shooting (.346), although he scored 11 in the final two minutes of regulation and overtime. Both Thabo Sefolosha (13 pts, 10 rebs) and Jeff Green (15 pts, 14 rebs) double-doubled for the Thunder. Danny Granger led the Pacers with 30 points.

Dallas 103 @ San Antonio 94

The Mavs ended San Antonio’s perfect November with the help of a huge fourth quarter rally, outscoring the Spurs 32-21 for the 9 point victory in San Antonio. Dirk led the way with 26 points, while Manu Ginobili was the high scorer of the night with 31. Despite Tyson Chandler’s unthinkable 13-for-16 night from the FT line, the Mavs went 20-for-31 as a team from the charity stripe, and still managed to end the Spurs’ winning streak at 12 games. Ginobili and Tim Duncan (15 points) were the only two Spurs starters to score in double figures, as neither Tony Parker (4-for-12 shooting, 9 points) nor Richard Jefferson (0-for-4 shooting, 2 points) could get anything going.

Chicago 97 @ Denver 98

The Nuggets held the Bulls off with a buzzer beater by Carmelo Anthony, who finished the night with a team-high 22 points. Denver managed to squander a 19-point, third quarter lead before coming back for the win. Former Warrior CJ Watson, who started for Derrick Rose (sore neck), blew up for 33 points for the Bulls. The Nuggets also played without their star point guard, Chauncey Billups, who is out with a wrist sprain and a broken nose. Ty Lawson filled in admirably with 17 points, while Nene had 18. Denver has now won 3 games in a row.

LA Lakers 96 @ Utah 102

The Jazz are on a roll again, coming back from an early 16-point deficit to extend their winning streak to 4 games and hand the Lakers their 3rd loss of the season. Deron Williams was nearly perfect, finishing the night with a team-high 29 points on 10-for-14 shooting from the field (3 3-pointers) and 6-for-6 from the line, and dishing out 12 assists against just 2 turnovers. Al Jefferson also chipped in 20 points. KoBeef led the Lakers with 31 points, while both Pau Gasol (21 pts, 11 rebs) and Lamar Odom (16 pts, 10 rebs) double-doubled. Overall the Lakers shot just .418 from the field, compared to .494 for the Jazz.

LA Clippers 108 @ Phoenix 116

You didn’t actually think the Clippers could win three in a row, did you? Jason Richardson scored 29 while 6th man Hakim Warrick had 25 as the Suns held off the upstart Clippers, who had won 2 in a row coming into Friday’s game. The Clippers shot surprisingly well from the field (.506) as Eric Gordon dropped 32 while both Blake Griffin and Ryan Gomes scored 20, but it wasn’t enough for the Suns, who had 5 players score 12 points or more.

New Orleans 97 @ Portland 78

After almost a week-long layoff, the Blazers returned to action and were dominated at home by the Hornets. 6th Man Wilie Green led New Orleans with 19 points, while CP3 did his usual – 16 points, 13 assists, 6 rebounds. Brandon Roy, who had been out the past 3 games with soreness in his knees, returned to action and led the Blazers with 27 points. Unfortunately for Portland, he was just about the only bright spot for the team, which shot .395 on the night. Three of the Blazers’ starters - Andre Miller, Marcus Camby, and Nic Batum – combined for 18 points on 7-for-21 shooting. Meanwhile, the Hornets had five players in double digits.

Preview of Saturday’s Western Conference Action:

Golden State (7-9) @ Minnesota (4-12)

The Warriors look to stop their 5-game losing streak and their 3rd road victory of the season against a scrappy T-Wolves team. K-Love, the NBA’s top rebounder, has been hot with 4 consecutive double-doubles, while Darko Milicic has had a pulse with 22 ppg over his last 3 contests. David Lee will be a game-time decision for the Warriors.

Memphis (7-9) @ Cleveland (6-9)

The Grizzlies have a modest 3-game winning streak going and bring their act to Cleveland, where they have lost 6 in a row. Antawn Jamison is suddenly alive and averaging 14.4 ppg in his last 9 games. Memphis is coming off of a close victory over the Warriors on Friday night, and is currently experimenting with OJ Mayo coming off the bench. It worked well against Golden State as Mayo scored 23 points.

Miami (9-7) @ Dallas (11-4)

After cooling off the hottest team in the NBA, the Mavs look to slap around the underperforming Heat. The newest Big Three just snapped a three-game losing streak against King James’s old team on Friday, but the Heat are still a mediocre 2-4 on the road. Dallas, meanwhile, looks to extend its 4-game winning streak on the shoulders of its Big One – Dirk, who is averaging 26.3 ppg.

Chicago (8-6) @ Sacramento (4-10)

Sacramento, who is 1-9 in its last 10, take on the Bulls, who sit atop the Central Division in the East Conference and are coming off a dramatic 1-point loss to the Nuggets. Note that the Bulls were without their leading scorer Derrick Rose against the Nuggets, and he is expected to return on Saturday. The Kings, who are coming off of an embarrassing loss at the Clippers on Thanksgiving Day, continue to experiment with Luther Head starting over Beno Udrih, and have gotten next to no offensive contribution from starting C Sam Dalembert (4.1 ppg).

After Friday’s games, here’s a look at Mapping the Western Conference:

Nearly a week after letting Pau Gasol have his perfect game, Andris Biedrins nearly had one of his own. Sadly, Biedrins 28 points on 13-15 shooting and 21 rebounds, 7 of them offensive, was not enough to hold off the Grizzlies balanced attack of interior and perimeter shooting. The Warriors fall to 7-9.

After struggling last season with injuries, Biedrins got his swagger back for one night as he consistently found soft spots in the Grizzlies defense, scoring layups off laser sharp passes from teammates and baby hooks off either hands.

But Biedrins alone couldn't stop the Grizzlies from scoring from the perimeter as OJ Mayo, 21 points, and rookie Greivis Vasquez, 10 points, both provided a spark off the bench. Coupled with their interior play by Zach Randolph, 14 points, and Rudy Gay, 25 points, the Grizzlies offense proved too much in the end.

Warriors guards Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry also got out of their funk, combining for 49 points and 12 assists. Struggling from deep this season, Curry made 4 of 5 3-point shots.

While the Grizzlies offense carried them most of the game, the second half surge was largely a defensive effort as their 11 blocks sent away a variety of seemingly easy drives. Marc Gasol had 3 blocks and Darrell Arthur had 4 alone.

But beyond blocks, the perimeter defense frustrated Dorell Wright all game, who shot a dismal 2-11 from the perimeter and miss the game-tying 3-pointer with 6 seconds left in the game. With a suspect handle already, Wright struggled to maneuver around the Grizzlies defense, coughing up the ball on a few occasions by recklessly pushing the ball upcourt into a triple team or getting picked just directing the offense. Although Wright struggled from perimeter, he still chipped in 6 boards and 8 assists.

The Warriors are now 1-8 without David Lee. But reports show that he is ready to return though he most likely will not play in tomorrow game versus the resurgent Minnesota Timberwolves.

Is it safe to say that Andris Biedrins got his swagger back? Hustling to grab every board near him and having his teammates set him up perfectly for easy layups, Biedrins is having the comeback game of his life with 24 points on 11-13 shooting. Heck, he has even made 2 free throws.

Jeremy Lin, on his first possession, took the ball hard to the lane and was hacked across the face and arm by Marc Gasol and did not get a call whatsoever. The next time down the court, Lin was tripped up and finally he got a call. Rookie no calls are expected but is it especially bad for Warriors rookies from Harvard? Lin has been productive on the defensive end with Stephen Curry sitting out with 4 fouls and has not looked overmatched against Memphis guards in Mike Conley and rookie Greivis Vasquez. Lin is starting the fourth.

Turnovers at the end of the third doomed any chances of closing the gap. Poor dribbling by Dorell Wright, ill advised passes by Vladimir Radmanovic, and lack of hustle to the ball allowed the Grizzlies to sit on a safe lead. When playing the Warriors, you always have a cushion with turnovers.

Here are a few tasty tid bits from the second quarter.

1. The Warriors have run the same play at least 10 times and 8 out of those ten times have been successful. The two times they haven’t? Bobbling a pass. This play, which seems to work exceptionally well against a team like the Grizzlies, involved the ball handler, either Monta Ellis, Stephen Curry, or Dorell Wright, coming down the middle drawing 3 defenders, which allows Jeff Adrien or Andris Biedrins to slide backdoor for an easy reverse layup. Biedrins, clearly the beneficiary of such plays already has 14 points on 7-9 shooting. Too bad Biedrins missed a freethrow that didn’t even hit the rim.

2. Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph are just too strong for the Warriors right now. If the Grizzlies were smart, they would just pound the ball down into Randolph or Gay at the block with every play and just have them draw fouls each time down fouling out the Warriors. The foul disparity right now is 11 to 6. And anytime Randolph is at the block, it has spelled doom for the Warriors as he’s drawn fouls on Adrien and Biedrins easily. Both times And-1s, too. Gay has 14 and Randolph has 9, but both are shooting above 50% from the field tonight.

3. OJ Mayo is a tremendous scorer off the bench. After coach Lionel Hollins relegated Mayo to the bench for some disciplinary reasons and uneven play, Mayo has been given the green light to shoot and score however he wants. And what better way to get his groove back then against the Warriors. In one quarter, Mayo has 11 points. He has missed only one shot.

4. Ellis the Scorer, defender, and distributor. Maybe it’s being in front of the home crowd but Ellis has dazzled with his scoring, hustle for steals and loose balls, and great interior passing. He leads the Warriors with 16 points and 4 assists. The Warriors will need more play like this from Ellis — struggling in the last several games — if they have any chance of winning.

The Warriors and the Grizzlies must be excited to play each other. For one thing, both teams definitely do not execute their offenses very well and both teams have porous transition defense. Stephen Curry and Andris Biedrins have already been called for travels. And Biedrins clearly doesn’t have the Lee’s touch around the basket when it comes to tip ins. Rebound tips, however, are Biedrins speciality as he already have 5, one offensive.

The Warriors are shooting decently at 48%. The only problem is the Grizzlies are shooting 60%. On the foul front, the Grizzlies have zero fouls after one quarter and the Warriors already have committed four.

The first 5 minutes were horrendous as the Grizzlies jumped out to a 13 point lead at one point as the Warriors failed to box out or defend perimeter jumpers. Marc Gasol looks like he might be a possibly Warrior killer tonight as his ability to extend his game to the perimeter and hit jumper will definitely expose the paint.

The Warriors on a 4 game slide and 1-7 without David Lee. To make matters worse, their on the road against a healthy Memphis Grizzlies team. From zero to hero in Memphis, Zach Randolph is averaging 17 points and 12 rebounds per game since returning from injury. Although the Grizzlies are 6-9, they look to be a match-up nightmare for the current injured Warriors squad.

Lee's absence has had a quite an effect on the team with reverberations felt in the offensive struggles of teammates. On both sides of the ball, the Warriors look as if they're playing pick-up ball, wildly throwing up jump shots with reckless abandon. Calling it "Nellieball" would be an understatement.

The offense hasn't been clicking since Lee's injury and part of that has been their struggles to hit jumpers. Curry's inability to drive and dish is partly hampered by his consistency issues shooting from the perimeter. Plus, without Lee's skills to help space the floor, passing to rookie in Jeff Adrien and all-hustle but no offense in Dan Gadzuric, has got to have an effect on not just his assists but his ability to make plays.

But besides that, Monta Ellis and Stephen Curry have struggled mightly and seemed over-matched even by the Houston Rockets' guards in Kevin Martin and Kyle Lowry. Atma Brother #1 at Golden State of Mind breaks down the matchups and seems to agree that these matchups favor the Grizzlies. But then again, when doesn't it favor the opponents?

During this 4 game losing streak, the Warriors remain, surprisingly, one of the better offensive teams but are nearly last in defensive, giving up 106 points a game compared to the Grizzlies 102.

The Warriors gave up 51 freethrow attempts against the Rockets and the free throw disparity continues to grow as the Denver Nuggets and the Los Angeles Lakers before that have all nearly doubled the Warriors freethrow attempts. What these stats expose are the struggles the Warriors continuously had recently with boxing out, reaching, and rotation. One of the many problems observable in the Rockets loss was the number of block calls as Warriors attempted to draw charges, desperately rushing into the expose paint with blown defensive assignments.

The Warriors currently sit second atop the Pacific Division, tied with the Phoenix Suns who also sit at 7-8. Looks as if this division has turned into the NFC West.
