The Raiders pulled out a come from behind victory in overtime on Sunday. While a close game was expected by many, the way that it got there was not. With the rain falling in a game with the NFL’s top two rushing teams you’d expect the majority of the plays to come via the ground game. This was not necessarily the case.

Chiefs Pass Rush vs. Raiders Pass Protection

The Chiefs ended up with 4 sacks for 20 yards, but more often than not Jason Campbell had time to throw the ball. Tamba Hali got one sack today when he overpowered Jared Veldheer to make his way to Jason Campbell.

However, the Chiefs sent different types of blitz packages in this game then they had all year. Coming into this game the Chiefs had not recorded one sack from anyone not in their front seven. This game rookie safety Eric Berry recorded two sacks.

Chiefs Pass Defense vs Raiders Passing Attack

The Raiders struggled mightily trying to get anything going through the air in the first half. Jason Campbell ended the half with 9 yards passing. In the second half, he and Jacoby Ford took over.

Campbell ended up 19/33 for 229 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Ford was his main target as he ended with six catches for 148 yards. All of Fords yards were in the second half and overtime.

Brandon Meyers filled in admirably for Zach Miller and ended up with three catches for 20 yards, but it was Tackle eligible Khalif Barnes that had the catch of the day out of the TE spot when he made a two yard TD grab.

The Raiders backs had a combined six catches for 33 yards. This was much closer to being a larger number, but FB Marcel Reece was denied a catch when he was pass interfered with down the right sideline. The play itself was denied on a Robert Gallery holding as the penalties offset.

All in all, both teams varied from their tenancies as each passed more than they ran the football. In the end, it was the Raiders rushing game that got the better of the marquee matchup as they had eight more yards on eight less carries.

To say the Oakland Raiders received a big game from Jacoby Ford in their 23-20 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs is a huge understatement. The rookie wide receiver and return man put together far and away the biggest performance of his young NFL career. Ford returned a kick for a touchdown to start the second half and then hauled in six receptions for 148 yards ALL IN THE SECOND HALF. Ford, like the rest of the Raiders offense, was kept quiet in the first half, but the entire team stepped up in a big way for the final 30+ minutes to improve the Raiders to 5-4 and give the Raiders their first three game winning streak since 2002.

The Raiders offense failed to show up in the first half and the defense kept the team in this game thanks to some timely tackles throughout the first half. The Chiefs went into the half only leading 10-0 thanks to a half-closing interception in the end zone by Jeremy Ware.

Signs of resurgence were quick in the second half as Jacoby Ford opened play returning the kickoff for a touchdown. On the subsequent kickoff the Chiefs fumbled the ball and the Raiders recovered deep in Chiefs territory. Unfortunately the Raiders couldn’t convert as Sebastian Janikowski missed a 47-yard field goal.

The Raiders defense kept the Chiefs mostly in check as the two teams exchanged scores. Some defensive lapses allowed the Chiefs to take a 20-17 lead before Jason Campbell led arguably his biggest drive as Raiders QB. Campbell took the team into field goal range with five seconds remaining to force OT. The Chiefs sputtered in OT and the game was there for the Raiders to win, which they did.

The story of the game has to be the breakout performance by Jacoby Ford. The rookie didn’t make any touchdown receptions but virtually all his catches came at clutch moments. The 22-yarder near the end of regulation got the team in scoring position to tie and then a 47-yarder on the first play of the Raiders OT drive put the team deep in Chiefs territory and basically ended this thing. It’s safe to say Ford will be a big waiver wire pick-up this week in fantasy football.

The Raiders now head into their bye week at both the best and worst times. It’s a great time because the team has positive momentum and can put together some strong preparation for their road trip to the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s a bad time because the team is playing so well and a bye could disrupt that rhythm.

Whatever the case, in two weeks they face a big game as they look to win a sixth game for the first time since they went 11-5 and won the AFC championship in 2002.

The Oakland Raiders have fought back against the Kansas City Chiefs to force overtime in their rivalry game today. The Raiders trailed 20-17 with 2:06 to play and no timeouts, but somehow found a way to drive 53 yards and tie the game 20-20 with three second left, thanks to a Sebastian Janikowski field goal.

The drive received several boosts along the way, primarily from rookie Jacoby Ford. After running back a kickoff return for a touchdown earlier in the game, Ford made two huge catches in the final fourth quarter drive, including a 22-yard catch that got the Raiders in field goal range. Ford had caught a 19 yard pass the previous play, but it was called back due to offensive holding, and the 49ers found themselves at their own 49 yard line with very little time remaining.

Campbell hooked up with Ford on the next play for 22 yards and after spiking the ball, the Raiders were in business on the Kansas City 22 with five seconds left. Janikowski came on and had no trouble drilling the 41 yard field goal to tie the game. The clock ran out after an upback caught the kickoff and the game was headed to overtime.

The Raiders have just forced a punt on the Chiefs first drive of OT and now have the ball on their own 38 with a golden opportunity to put this game away. We’ll see if the Raiders can take care of business.

The Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs are adding another incredible battle to their historic rivalry. After the Raiders came back to take a 17-13 lead, the Chiefs have driven back down the field to take a 20-17 lead. The Chiefs started at their own 15 yard line and proceeded to drive 85 yards thanks to a huge raiders fumble and capped the drive with a 20 yard touchdown pass to Dwayne Bowe.

The Raiders had forced a three and out but Nick Miller fumbled the subsequent punt and the Chiefs recovered on the Raiders 30 yard line. The call was somewhat questionable but the Raiders used up all their challenges and thus could not challenge the play. The Chiefs then moved thirty yards in five plays and scored their go ahead touchdown.

The Chiefs just forced a Raiders punt and Shane Lechler put up a rare poor punt. The Chiefs start on their own 45 with 4:04 remaining in the game, looking to run out the clock on the backs of Thomas Jones and Jamaal Charles.

Oakland Raiders offensive coordinator dipped into his bag of tricks, calling up a play to pass eligible offensive tackle Khalif Barnes for the go-ahead touchdown midway through the third quarter. The Chiefs took a 13-7 lead on the previous drive after looking ready to drive into the end zone. The Chiefs drove down to the Oakland 8 but a 9 yard sack caused the drive to stall out as the Raiders defense stiffened up in the red zone.

On the ensuing Raiders possession, the Raiders went 74 yards in seven plays thanks in large part to big plays from running back Darren McFadden. After Jacoby Ford picked up 16 yards on a pass to start the drive, McFadden rushed for 34 yards down the sideline. Three plays later McFadden gained 15 yards on a pass, ending up on the Kansas City 2. After Michael Bush was stuffed, the Raiders declared Khalif Barnes to be eligible. The Raiders immediately went to him on a little out pattern and the big man hauled in the touchdown. The Janikowski extra point gave the Raiders a 14-13 lead.

The Raiders have just forced a punt and will look to build on their 14-13 lead. We’re late in the third quarter and a time-consuming drive would certainly be a big help to the Raiders right now. The defense has played incredibly well but could certainly use a break right now.

The Oakland Raiders jumped out quick on the Kansas City Chiefs in the second half but then blew a golden opportunity to tie the game or take the lead. The Raiders opened the second half by running back the half-opening kickoff 94 yards for the touchdown. Jacoby Ford had little trouble running the ball back to cut the Chiefs lead to 10-7.

The Raiders seemed poised to really shake things up on the subsequent Javier Arenas kick return. The Raiders were called for unsportsmanlike conduct in the previous touchdown celebration and pushed back 15 yards on the kickoff. Javier Arenas caught the Sebastian Janikowski kick and had the ball stripped from him at the Kansas City 35. However, the Raiders stalled out and after a three and out, Janikowski missed a 47 yard field goal wide left.

Nonetheless, the Raiders have turned this into a one possession game. The offense will need to get their heads on straight, and if they do, the Raiders can still pull out what would be a monster win for them.

The Oakland Raiders struggled to find consistency in the first half as they trail the Kansas City Chiefs 10-0. However, the Raiders did close out the half with a huge positive as cornerback Jeremy Ware hauled in a tipped interception of Matt Cassel to prevent any further Chiefs points. Cassel was looking to put the Chiefs up 17-0 on a pass to Tony Moeaki with only a few seconds remaining in the half, but it was tipped and caught by Jeremy Ware.

After taking a 7-0 lead early in the second quarter, the Chiefs forced a Darren McFadden fumble two plays into the next Raiders possession and turned that into a 10-0 lead courtesy of Ryan Succup. A couple possessions the Raiders were fortunate to not give up a touchdown to the Chiefs. Shane Lechler punted to Javier Arenas who ran it back for a touchdown, only to have it called back by an illegal block in the back. The Chiefs moved down the field but eventually settled for a quick-kick by Succup.

The Raiders have struggled mightily to get anything going at this point, but their defense has done enough to keep them in the game. Trailing 10-0 this game is eminently winnable for the Raiders. A victory would move the Raiders to a half game back of the Chiefs in the division and continue this midseason resurgence.

The first 15+ minutes of the Oakland Raiders showdown with the Kansas City Chiefs has produced a combination of crazy plays, referee struggles, and a nice touchdown catch by a former Bay Area wide receiver. Chiefs QB Matt Cassel hooked up with wide receiver, and former Cal product, Verran Tucker to give the Chiefs a 7-0 lead on the Raiders with twenty seconds into the second quarter.

The game has produced an assortment of bizarre plays thus far, including fake punts by both teams. On 4th and 6 at the Oakland 46, the Chiefs came out in a punt formation and then switched into a wildcat formation with Javier Arenas at the QB position. Arenas took the direct snap and was tackled a yard shy of the first down.

On the subsequent Raiders possession the Raiders ran their own fake. They lined up in a punt formation on 4th and 5 at their own 46 and fired a direct snap to Rock Cartwright who was stopped three yards short of the first down. The Chiefs used that excellent field position to march down the field for their touchdown.

Of course, even that score had its share of craziness. On 3rd and 2 at the Raiders 6, Cassel passed to Tony Moeaki who appeared to score a touchdown. The play was reversed and Moeaki was ruled down inside the one yard line. When the Chiefs ran their next play, the sideline person handling the yard marker had the 4th down marker showing.

The Chiefs ran the play while coach Todd Haley tried to get the ref’s attention. This play included a holding penalty and after much discussion, the refs acknowledged their mistake switched it back to first down. The penalty made it first and goal from the 11. On the next play the Chiefs negated all the problems on the touchdown pass from Cassel to Tucker. All in all, a lot of work for one touchdown.
