The first of two power play goals from Joe Pavelski put the Sharks ahead of the Avalanche, while the second gave them insurance to hold on and win 4-2 in Colorado. Pavelski scored just 1:08 into the second period on a power play after Matt Duchene was called for tripping. Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau set up the calculated shot by "Pavs," to tie the game, while his second shot came courtesy of another Heatley - Marleau assist on a 5-on-3 power play. Kevin Porter got two minutes for holding, while T.J. Galiardi got the third penalty for the Avalanche on a delay of game call. The shot came 8:44 into the second period.

The game had been previously tied at one-all in the first period, with Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey scoring 14:43 into the frame. Scott Nichol provided the tying goal with only 49 seconds to go in the first off of a Jamal Mayers and John McCarthy assist.

Milan Hejduk brought the Avalanche closer to tying the game with a power play goal in the third period after Dan Boyle went out on a two minute interference penalty. Hejduk made his way to goalie Antero Niittymaki's right side and lightly tapped in the deflected puck with nobody near him 7:25 into the third frame. It was all for naught, though, when Logan Couture got the puck in the empty net after what appeared to be a couple deflections, including one off of a linesman at 18:48 into the final period.

Craig Anderson allowed three goals on thirty-three shots. Niittymaki made twenty-nine saves in thirty-one shots on goal. The Sharks continue their road trip by taking on the Edmonton Oilers at Rexall Place on Saturday.

Dan Boyle drew a two minute penalty for interference and the Avalanche took advantage of the advantage with a power play goal by Milan Hejduk. Chris Stewart provided the assist with a shot on goal that was deflected off of goalie Antero Niittymaki. The Sharks didn't have anybody on Niittymaki's right side and Hejduk seemed to just sneak in there and lightly tap it in 7:25 into the third period.

Joe Pavelski has two goals on the power play, both in the second period, with Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau providing the assist on both of them. Scott Nichol accounts for the other goal for San Jose, late in the first period. Jamal Mayers picked up on the assist there.

Kyle Cumiskey has provided the lone goal for the Avalanche, in the first period. The Sharks have gotten four power plays and lead the Avalanche 3-1 going into the third period.
The Avalanche were hit with two penalties, a 2:00 minute affair on Kevin Porter for holding and another two minute delay of game penalty on T.J. Galiardi for flipping the puck up over the glass, bringing up a five-on-three power play. It was all business again for the Sharks, who calmly made their way to net, served up a couple passes and eventually the Dany Heatley - Patrick Marleau assist provided Joe Pavelski with another power play goal to put the Sharks up 3-1 8:44 into the second period.

Early in the second period, Matt Duchene got a two minute call for tripping and we had a San Jose Sharks power play. The Sharks took advantage of it early with very calm passing to set up a seemingly easy Joe Pavelski score 1:08 into the second period. Dany Heatley and Patrick Marleau picked up the assists on the shot.

The Sharks lead 2 -1, with the aforementioned goal by Pavelski and the shot at the end of the second by Scott Nichol. Be sure to head to Fear The Fin's gameday thread for discussion.

After conceding a goal late in the first period to Kyle Cumiskey, the Sharks responded by grabbing a goal in the last minute of the period. Scott Nichol scored on Craig Anderson while Jamal Mayers picked up an assist in his first real action of the year.

The Sharks are looking fast out there, but turnovers remain a problem and they'll likely have a hard time getting another shot through going into the second period.
The Colorado Avalanche are up by one against the San Jose Sharks in the first period. Sharks goalie Antero Niittymaki let the puck get away from him while attempting a pass from behind the net and Avalanche defenseman Kyle Cumiskey got a piece of it and sunk it in the net for the first goal by an Avalanche defenseman this season.

The Sharks are off to an extremely slow start, and now it's hard to blame that on the trip to Europe. It was easy to explain away the home opener loss to the Thrashers and attribute it to the fact that the team had a week in-between games, which is generally far too long. It's not so easy to rationalize the beatdown at the hands of the Hurricanes by that same criteria.

In the 5-2 loss to the Carolina Hurricanes, goalie Antti Niemi gave up five of 31 shots on goal and once again made it known that San Jose's netminder situation is less-than-stellar, and at best, a question mark. The defense didn't do anything to help him as turnovers, turnovers and more turnovers sealed their fate in the end.

Their biggest problems lie in the aforementioned turnovers. They have guys who can steal the puck, they have guys who can put it in the net and they have a pair of goalies who really aren't that bad. But just about all of the guys just mentioned give up the puck on a regular basis. They can't have that.

Joe Thornton says the team needs to be smarter. Scott Nichol echoes the sentiments. Coach Todd McLellan is of the same mindset, and chose to work his team in the video room as opposed to having them slave on the ice. They need to not make those mental mistakes if they're to beat the Avalanche tonight.

One can assume that Antero Niittymaki will be getting the start for the Sharks tonight in Colorado. Then again, one may have assumed he would be getting the goaltending duties against the Hurricanes as well. Either way, he'll look to distinguish himself as a good goaltender and earn himself some more minutes in net.

In keeping with the turnover talk, Niittymaki should make life a little easier for his comrades on the ice, he's been proven to give up less rebounds on a more consistent basis than Niemi, limiting scrambles and keeping his team for becoming disorganized.

Craig Anderson will be in the net for the Avalanche, and he boasts an impressive .925 save percentage through the beginning of the season. He'll have the offensive support of Chris Stewart, already with five goals on the season, and guys like Matt Duchene and Paul Stastny.
