Hagan, a senior from Los Angeles, Calif., had the first two sacks of his collegiate career against UCLA on cornerback blitzes, while adding an interception, a pass breakup and a team-high-tying five tackles. California defense limited UCLA to 144 yards in total offense, including 26 yards rushing to a Bruin squad that had been averaging 262.4 yards rushing per game.

Anger, a junior from Camarillo, Calif., punted five times for 252 yards (50.4 yards per punt), placing three punts inside the 20-yard line. He had three punts greater than 50 yards, including a best of 55 yards.

It was a complete game by the Golden Bears defense, as Clancy Pendergast’s unit shut down the Bruins from start to finish. Here’s the recap from the Cal SB Nation blog, California Golden Blogs (read the rest of it here!).

Nothing needs to be sorted out by a defense that’s finding its mojo at just the right time. These were the stars of the game from start to finish. It was a complete team effort, as ten Golden Bears had three tackles or more.

The Revolver offense UCLA ran so successfully against Texas (264 yards on the ground overall) came to a halt in Memorial. UCLA managed 16 rushing yards on their first drive and then put up only nine more the rest of the game, finishing at about one yard a carry. That number shrinks to three yards if you average in Johnathan Franklin’s very next carry, where Chris Conte stripped the ball from his hands and Josh Hill recovered it inside the red zone, setting up Vereen’s second touchdown and a 14-0 Cal lead. (I should mention Derrick Hill somewhere; his stats aren’t impressive, but when he’s in, there’s just no space at all for the running backs inside.)

And the pass defense was equally up-to-the-task. Darian Hagan, Bryant Nnbauife, Marc Anthony, Steve Williams, D.J. Campbell all broke up a pass apiece. Hagan also added an interception of Prince, forcing UCLA’s quarterback to a horrid performance (13 for 31 and barely 3 yards per attempt).

The California Golden Bears bounced back from a two game losing streak with a 35-7 domination of the UCLA Bruins. Cal was led by strong performance from running back Shane Vereen as he had 151 rushing yards, 51 receiving yards, and two rushing touchdowns. The Cal defense brought the pressure as they were able to get to UCLA QB Kevin Prince on a regular basis, totaling five sacks and numerous QB pressures.

Cal more or less had this game in the bag by the end of the first half as they went on a 28-0 tear by halftime. Shane Vereen rushed for both his touchdowns in the first quarter, while Kevin Riley threw and ran for touchdowns to stretch the lead to 28 before the end of the half.

Cal seemed to take their foot off the gas on offense in the third quarter, but UCLA was never able to take advantage. UCLA got a big kickoff return to start the third quarter and turned it into a touchdown. They forced a Cal punt but Kevin Prince followed that up with an interception. Cal missed a subsequent FG and UCLA had a nice little drive scoring. However, the Cal defense stiffened up to force the punt and would never really let UCLA get going after that. UCLA did get down into Cal territory late in the game but couldn’t get the garbage time TD.

The Bears had been riding a two game losing streak and now gets to head down to USC with a bit of momentum. The Bears haven’t beaten USC since their triple overtime upset in 2003 of the then #3 Trojans down at the Coliseum. It’s safe to say Cal will need a monster effort from Shane Vereen and some semblance of competence from Kevin Riley.

The first time Cal faced the Pistol this season, they got lit up. Now they get their second go-around, this time against a Pac-10 opponent adopting the madcap offense. John Crumpacker reports from the Chronicle.

The Bears can’t do anything about their humbling result against Nevada a month ago, a 52-31 pasting by the Wolf Pack, but they do get another chance to face the Pistol offense, that confounding shotgun-triple-option attack that bedeviled them so.

“It definitely is a chance to redeem ourselves and prove how good a defense we are,” linebacker D.J. Holt said. “We were a little embarrassed. We’re a better defense than that. That night didn’t show it. No excuses. They were the better team that night. We try to have a short-term memory as a defense and get ready for UCLA.”

Presumably, defensive coordinator Clancy Pendergast told his lads to keep an eye on the Nevada quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, but that gazelle in cleats and pads still rushed for 148 yards and three touchdowns and passed for 181 yards and one score.

UCLA doesn’t run a pure pistol set the way Chris Ault’s Wolf Pack do. Norm Chow still has some West Coast things going here, including utilizing a lot of play action and not as much zone read. So there could be things the Bruins do that cross Cal’s defense up. Could go either way, but the same strategy should be applied: Be disciplined, and keep the offense in front of them.

Junior wide receiver Nelson Rosario missed practice with a severe ankle sprain, though Neuheisel said it did not fall under the dreaded “high ankle sprain” category. Rosario is all but ruled out for UCLA’s visit to Cal on Saturday, however.

Probably of more interest is that a highly touted defensive end Cal was seeking last season will be facing off against the Golden Bears this Saturday.

Freshman phenom Owamagbe Odighizuwa, who was rated the No. 2 defensive end in the country by Rivals.com and No. 8 by Scout.com, is slated to move into the starting lineup opposite redshirt freshman Keenan Graham.

Former starting defensive end Nate Chandler, who converted from tight end during the offseason, will slide into the starting defensive tackle role next to senior David Carter, and former starter Justin Edison will move to the second unit.

“We’re trying to create some more depth there, and some more energy up the field,” UCLA head coach Rick Neuheisel said. “It’s great to have competition, so we’re going to continue to compete there and see us who can give us our best four, and spell them as often as we need to.”

The UCLA incumbent starter should be back for Saturday’s game, the LA Times reports.

“He said he feels good. Now we have to be careful we don’t overwork him” in practice, Coach Rick Neuheisel said.

Prince’s return will be huge, especially for a UCLA offense that’s expected to try and run the ball down Cal’s throats. Considering they run the same Pistol that Nevada gashed Cal for 50 points and hundreds of rushing yards, Prince’s legs will be crucial. Richard Brehaut is not the same type of running threat.

Cal should also have a few critical Golden Bears back in action. Both Allen and Mohamed did play against Arizona, but were fairly limited due to lingering injury issues. Jonathan Okanes of Bear Talk reports.

Coach Jeff Tedford said the time off has definitely helped some of his banged-up players, most notably linebacker Mike Mohamed and wide receiver Keenan Allen.
