The San Francisco Giants climbed back into first place with a 9-2 thrashing of the Milwaukee Brewers. The Giants jumped on Chris Narveson early thanks to a Jose Guillen grand slam. Guillen has been a huge boost to the Giants since he was designated for assignment by the Royals. He followed up the grand slam with an RBI single in the fifth inning that brought in two more runs. The Giants added three in the seventh on a Pat Burrell homerun, which was more than enough for the victory.

Giants pitcher Barry Zito lasted six innings, holding the Brewers to two runs on three hits. Five Giants relievers combined to close out the final three innings for the victory.

Prior to the Giants win the Padres dropped the series finale to the Cardinals and thus dropped half a game back of the Giants in the NL West. The Rockies and Dodgers are currently battling in extra innings in a 6-6 tie. The Rockies jumped out to a 6-1 lead, but the Dodgers chipped away and eventually tied it up on a Matt Kemp double in the bottom of the ninth. If the Rockies win they’ll move into a tie with the Padres for second, a half game out of first.

The Milwaukee Brewers dropped the San Francisco Giants into second place in the NL West thanks to a strong pitching performance by Yovani Gallardo and a poor defensive decision by 3B Pablo Sandoval.

Gallardo held the Giants to one run on five hits over seven innings, but received an offensive boost on a fourth inning force out that ended up costing the Giants both Brewers runs. The Brewers loaded the bases with one out when Alcides Escobar hit a fairly sharp ground ball to Pablo Sandoval. Sandoval caught the ball on the hop and hesitated a moment before throwing Prince Fielder out at the plate. Sandoval had a potential double play set up if he simply stepped on third and then through Escobar out at first. Sandoval was either concerned about Escobar’s speed, or just wasn’t prepared for a ball to come at him. Throw in what looked to be a slightly tricky hop and he took the safe force out at home to prevent a run from scoring.

The decision cost the Giants as the next batter, catcher Jonathan Lucroy blooped a single into right field that plated two runs. Although the Brewers did not score again, the two runs were all they needed. In the fifth inning the Giants put men on second and third with one out and pitcher Tim Lincecum heading to the plate. As he got onto the dirt behind the catcher, manager Bruce Bochy called Lincecum back and sent up pinch hitter Nate Schierholtz.

Up to that point Lincecum had given up the two runs in five innings of work and was looking fairly solid. Needless to say Tim was pretty pissed off by the decision as he had only thrown 72 pitches. Bochy seemed to just shrug his shoulders as if to say, “I had no other choice.” Schierholtz did manage a walk followed by a run-scoring fielder’s choice by Mike Fontenot, but that was it as Juan Uribe popped out to short to end the inning.

The Giants did a superb job holding the Brewers to one walk and no hits over four innings of work, but the Giants offense couldn’t get any more runs across and lost 2-1. The loss combined with Padres and Braves wins dropped the Giants to one half game out of first in the West and two back of the Braves in the wild card.

(Sports Network) - The San Francisco Giants haven't lost consecutive games since late August, part of the reason they now lead the National League West.

The Giants will try to avoid a second straight defeat this evening behind the resurgent Tim Lincecum as they continue a three-game series with the Milwaukee Brewers at AT&T Park.

San Francisco hasn't tasted defeat in consecutive games since a three-game slide from Aug. 25-28, going 12-6 since to take a half-game edge over the Padres for first place in the NL West. They maintained that advantage despite Friday night's 3-0 loss to the Brewers.

Milwaukee's Randy Wolf threw his first shutout since Sept. 3, 2008, tossing a three-hitter for the ninth shutout of his career.

"The biggest thing for me was fastball command, getting ahead with my fastball and then able to expand a little bit with my off-speed pitches," Wolf said. "To come in and play in this [playoff] environment makes it a lot of fun."

Prince Fielder and Carlos Gomez each drove in a run for the Brewers, who picked up their second win in a row.

Jose Guillen, Cody Ross and Pat Burrell had San Francisco's three hits -- all singles -- and Madison Bumgarner took the loss after yielding two runs over 5 2/3 innings as the Giants were shut out for the third time in six games.

"We just didn't do anything with the bats. [Bumgarner's] been throwing the ball well and he did tonight. We didn't play our best game tonight," said Giants skipper Bruce Bochy, whose club had won five of seven coming in.

Bochy turns tonight to Lincecum, who has put an awful August behind him and he looks to win a fourth start in a row this evening.

After going 0-5 with a 7.82 earned run average last month, Lincecum has rattled off three consecutive victories while posting a 2.08 ERA in that span. He allowed just one run over seven innings of his most recent triumph on Sunday versus the Padres.

"We have a team that's rolling right now behind me and scoring runs," said Lincecum. "The confidence is at an all-time high right now for this season coming off the month that I had."

The 26-year-old right-hander is 14-9 with a 3.60 ERA and 208 strikeouts over 30 starts and 192 1/3 innings. His season includes a victory over the Brewers on July 7 in which the two-time defending National League Cy Young Award winner held them to a run over seven frames with 10 strikeouts.

Lincecum is 2-2 with a 4.76 ERA in six career starts versus the Brewers.

Brewers starter Yovani Gallardo will try to make it two winning starts in a row after snapping a five-start winless streak (0-2) with a victory over the Cubs on Sunday.

The 24-year-old Gallardo gave up just four hits and three walks over seven scoreless innings, striking out six to record his first victory since Aug. 8. The right-hander improved to 12-7 with a 3.64 ERA in 28 starts.

"I went out there and just tried to follow the game plan," Gallardo said. "I was able to locate my fastball."

Gallardo, who won a career-best 13 games last year, is 3-2 with a 4.25 ERA in five career starts versus the Giants.

San Francisco swept a four-game series in Milwaukee from July 5-8 and has won seven of the past nine meetings between the ballclubs.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Randy Wolf pitched his first complete- game shutout in over two years, as the Milwaukee Brewers handled the San Francisco Giants, 3-0, in the opener of a three-game series at AT&T Park.

Wolf (12-11) gave up just three singles to record his first shutout since September 3, 2008 when he was member of the Astros. The left-hander, who struck out six and walked two, picked up the ninth shutout of his career.

Prince Fielder and Carlos Gomez each drove in a run for the Brewers, who have won three of five.

Madison Bumgarner (5-6) went 5 2/3 innings in the start for San Francisco, giving up two runs on nine hits. He also fanned five batters and walked one for the Giants, who remained a half-game ahead of the Padres atop the NL West standings.

The Brewers got the only run they would need in the first inning. Ryan Braun hit a two-out double and scored on Fielder's single to left.

Milwaukee had a chance to extend its lead in the second. However, Corey Hart flied out with the bases loaded to end the threat.

The Giants put their first two men on base in the third. Jose Guillen and Cody Ross hit back-to-back singles before Bumgarner grounded into a double play. Edgar Renteria popped out to strand a runner on third.

The Brewers tacked on a run in the fifth to make it a 2-0 game. Braun doubled and Fielder walked. Runners were on the corners after Casey McGehee grounded into a fielder's choice. Gomez drove in a run when he grounded into a fielder's choice.

Milwaukee plated another run in the seventh. Guillermo Mota gave up a one-out double to Gomez, who stole third. Alcides Escobar walked to put men on the corners. Jeremy Affeldt came in from the bullpen and George Kottaras hit a grounder to the reliever, whose errant throw home allowed a run to cross the plate. The runners advanced to second and third on the play. Affeldt retired the next two batters to keep it a 3-0 contest.

The Giants left a runner on second in the home seventh. Aubrey Huff worked a one-out walk and moved to second on Buster Posey's groundout. Pat Burrell, though, grounded out to end the threat.

After Juan Uribe walked to start the bottom of the eighth, Wolf retired the final six batters in order to record the 13th complete game of his career.

San Francisco swept a four-game series in Milwaukee from July 5-8 and has won seven of the past nine meetings between the ballclubs...Wolf improved to 9-5 in 18 career starts against the Giants...Bumgarner hasn't tasted victory since August 20...Braun went 3-for-5 with two runs scored.

First place in the NL West ... for the Giants? I'm immediately reminded of a postgame thread I saw at McCovey Chronicles, in which the Giants and Padres bickered over who would take the NL West. Neither team seemed to want it. Looks like the Giants have changed their tune at this point, and Friday night's opener to the three-game series against the Brewers at AT&T Park should shed some light on whether or not they intend to keep it.

Almost everyone seems to be playing well right now for the Giants. Matt Cain looks like one of the best pitchers in baseball, Timmy is throwing strikes and Jonathan Sanchez is flat out dirty. During the 2-1 series win over the Dodgers, the Giants seemed to struggle on the hitting front — that is until Thursday's 10-2 blowout over their hated rivals in which Aubrey Huff hit a three-run homer, Jose Guillen hit a two run homer of his own, Buster Posey belted in a solo shot while Freddy Sanchez had three RBI of his own.

It's one of those rare occasions you get to type about Giants hitters doing something good without a "but then ..." at the end of it.

In game one, Madison Bumgarner takes the mound and is trying to turn his own luck around. He's 1-3 in his last nine starts, losing his last outing while allowing only one run and striking out four over seven innings. He's 5-5 with a 3.28 ERA in 15 starts.

The first (and only) time he played the Brewers was on July 6th, pitching eight shutout innings, allowing three hits and walking three with five strikeouts in the Giants 6-1 victory.

The Brewers don't have a whole lot to play for right now. They're not in the playoff hunt, which either means they'll roll over or they'll make thousands and thousands of Giants fans cry. One or the other.
