San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Jonathan Sanchez set a career-high with 12 strikeouts over seven strong innings, and the Giants got homers from Aubrey Huff and Jose Guillen to beat the Dodgers, 10-2, to finally move back into first place in the NL West.

San Diego, which lost 4-0 at St. Louis earlier Thursday, is now a half-game behind San Francisco. It's the first time the Giants are alone in first place since May 6. The Padres and Giants conclude the season with a three-game set at AT&T Park.

The Rockies are looming just 2 1/2 games out of first place. The Giants have three games in Colorado, September 24-26.

Sanchez (11-8) allowed four hits and two runs -- one earned -- without walking a batter as he won his third straight decision. The lefty has given up just one earned run in his last 27 innings.

Huff belted a three-run homer in the third inning off Ted Lilly (8-11). Buster Posey followed with a blast over the wall in left field and Guillen added a two-run shot off Jeff Weaver in the fifth.

Edgar Renteria had four hits and Guillen three for the Giants, who took the rubber match of the three-game series and won for the ninth time in 12 contests. Freddy Sanchez had three RBI.

Lilly gave up seven hits and six runs over 3 1/3 innings to drop his third consecutive decision.

Russ Mitchell belted his first career homer for the Dodgers, losers in nine of 12 games.

Rafael Furcal doubled leading off the game and scored on a Juan Uribe throwing error.

Huff tripled in the bottom half and Posey followed with a double. The Giants then scored four times in the third. Renteria bunted for a base hit, Freddy Sanchez doubled and Huff smashed his 25th homer of the year, a shot to right. Posey then sent a laser over the wall in left field for a 5-1 margin.

Freddy Sanchez walked with the bases full in the fourth, but Mitchell homered leading off the fifth.

Guillen drilled a two-run shot to left-center in the bottom of the frame for an 8-2 margin, and Freddy Sanchez doubled home two more in the eighth with Jon Link on the mound for LA.

The Giants won the season series, 10-8, beating the Dodgers in a yearly set for the first time since 2005. These teams will open the 2011 season against each other at Dodger Stadium on April 1, 2011...Jonathan Sanchez is 2-5 lifetime against the Dodgers...Guillen, who came into the game mired in a 6-for-35 slump, went 3-for-3...The Giants host Milwaukee this weekend, the Padres continue their set in St. Louis, and the Rockies will be in LA.

(Sports Network) - Winning series is what gets teams to the postseason and lately that's what the San Francisco Giants have been able to do. The playoff- hopeful club looks to make it five straight series victories tonight in the finale of a three-game set versus the Los Angeles Dodgers at AT&T Park.

The Giants will also shoot for their fourth straight series triumph over the National League West-rival Dodgers after evening this set with Thursday's 2-1 win behind Matt Cain's seven shutout innings of three-hit ball and five strikeouts. Sergio Romo tossed a scoreless eighth before Brian Wilson ran into some trouble in the ninth inning. The closer allowed a home run, but managed to record his 43rd save.

Mike Fontenot's RBI single in the seventh inning opened the scoring and Pablo Sandoval plated Aubrey Huff in the eighth on a fielder's choice. Buster Posey and Juan Uribe each had two hits.

"We'd like to get some more runs, especially since our pitchers have really been pitching well," Fontenot said. "But sometimes you have to grind them out like this."

San Francisco has grinded San Diego's lead atop the NL West down to just a half-game, the same distance it sits behind Atlanta in the wild card standings. The Giants haven't made the postseason since 2003 and have alternated wins and losses over their last five games.

Giants starter Jonathan Sanchez is one inning from tying his career-high scoreless innings streak of 13.0 and will try to do that tonight. Sanchez tossed seven shutout innings in a win at Los Angeles on Sept. 5, then held the Padres scoreless over five frames last Friday at Petco Park. He did walk seven batters in the 1-0 win, but did not record a decision.

The left-hander is 10-8 in 30 games (29 starts) this season with a 3.29 earned run average, but is only 1-5 in 14 lifetime matchups, 10 of which have been starts, with the Dodgers.

Los Angeles will wrap up what has been a disappointing 10-game road trip Thursday and wasted a solid effort from starting pitcher Chad Billingsley in last night's loss.

Billingsley allowed one run in seven innings and fanned seven batters to absorb the loss. George Sherrill gave up the other run in relief, as the Dodgers remained 10 1/2 games off the lead in both the NL West and wild card.

"He went after it and a soft single beat him. He had another great game," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of Billingsley.

Andre Ethier finished with a team-best two hits and homered off Wilson with two outs in the ninth inning to account for LA's scoring.

The Dodgers, who are 3-6 on the road swing, hope Ted Lilly can tame the Giants when he toes the rubber tonight. Lilly is 5-2 with a 3.33 ERA in eight starts for Los Angeles since coming over in a trade from Chicago, but is winless (0-2) in his previous three outings. Lilly lost last Thursday in a 3-2 setback at Houston, as he was reached for three runs in six innings.

Lilly did not figure into the decision of a 5-4 defeat versus San Francisco on Sept. 4 and permitted two runs and three hits through seven innings. The lefty is 3-1 in six career starts against the Giants.

San Francisco leads the 2010 series with LA by a 9-8 margin and is 6-2 in the previous eight meetings between the ballclubs.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Matt Cain threw seven effective innings and the Giants edged theDodgers, 2-1, to inch closer in the NL West and the wild card race.

Mike Fontenot's broken-bat single plated the go-ahead run in the seventh and Aubrey Huff scored the eventual game-winner on a Pablo Sandoval ground ball in the eighth for San Francisco, which is a half-game behind San Diego for the lead in the NL West. The Padres lost at Colorado earlier Wednesday. The Giants, winners in eight of their last 11 contests, are also a half-game behind Atlanta for the wild card lead. The Braves fell at home to Washington Wednesday afternoon.

San Francisco's victory came one night after Clayton Kershaw stymied the Giants in a 1-0 final. The Dodgers won that game despite getting just one hit. Los Angeles had just four on Wednesday.

Cain (12-10) gave up three hits and had five strikeouts to win his third straight decision. The right-hander moved to 2-8 all-time against the Dodgers.

Andre Ethier homered off closer Brian Wilson with two outs in the ninth, but the Dodgers lost the second portion of the three-game series. Wilson then fanned Jay Gibbons to lock down his 43rd save of the year.

Chad Billingsley (11-10) scattered six hits, including Fontenot's base hit, walked two and fanned seven over seven frames, but lost his second consecutive start.

Sandoval fanned to leave the bases loaded in the first inning. After Billingsley singled with one out in the third, neither team had a hit until Buster Posey singled with one out in the bottom of the sixth. Cody Ross flied out to center to leave two runners on base that inning.

Pinch-hitter Travis Ishikawa doubled with one out in the San Francisco seventh and pinch-runner Emmanuel Burriss advanced to third on a wild pitch. With two outs, Fontenot sent a soft liner to center field.

George Sherrill entered to start the bottom of the eighth on the mound for the Dodgers. Huff doubled down the left field line, just beyond a diving Gibbons. After Buster Posey was intentionally walked, Kenley Jansen came in from the bullpen and retired Juan Uribe on a fly ball, but then uncorked a wild pitch with Sandoval at the plate. Sandoval then grounded a ball to the right side, but Ryan Theriot's throw home was high and late.

Cain went over the 200-inning plateau for the fourth straight season, joining Jack Sanford (1960-63), Juan Marichal (1962-71), Gaylord Perry (1966-71) and Jim Barr (1973-77) as only pitchers in San Francisco-era history to log at least four or more consecutive seasons of 200-plus innings...Theriot is mired in an 0-for-25 slump...Wilson is six saves shy of claiming the San Francisco record for a single season as Rod Beck had 48 in 1993.

(Sports Network) - Since its a longshot for the Los Angeles Dodgers to capture a postseason berth, they can at least make it more difficult for other clubs to achieve the feat.

Los Angeles got off to a good start playing spoiler by beating the San Francisco Giants, 1-0, last night in the opener of a three-game series at AT&T Park behind a four-hit shutout from Clayton Kershaw. LA will try again Wednesday in the second portion of this set with Chad Billingsley on the hill.

Kershaw struck out four batters in his first-career shutout and ended a four- start winless streak (0-3) in the process, helping the Dodgers to their third win in four tries following a six-game losing streak. The effort also pushed the Giants 1 1/2 games behind San Diego for the National League West lead.

"Every fifth day I'm ready to pitch," Kershaw said. "It's fun to play against teams that are right in the thick of things. That makes this game important, which is good."

Los Angeles scored the only run of the game in the sixth inning when Casey Blake grounded into a fielder's choice to score Reed Johnson, who was hit by a pitch. Giants shortstop Juan Uribe bobbled Blake's shot off the mound and couldn't get the force out at second base, allowing Johnson to score. Kershaw moved Johnson up a base with a bunt, and two walks later, Uribe's fielding error allowed the Dodgers to take the lead.

Matt Kemp recorded the only hit for Los Angeles, which is 10 1/2 games off the pace in both the NL West and wild card race.

Billingsley hopes to trim that deficit tonight and has alternated wins and losses over his past five decisions. He lost at San Diego last Wednesday and allowed all four runs and six hits in 5 1/3 innings of a 4-0 defeat. He fell to 11-9 in 27 starts and raised his earned run average to 3.65.

Before losing to the Padres, the righty defeated San Francisco on September 3 and held the Giants to two unearned runs in eight innings of a 4-2 victory. In 19 career games (14 starts) against the Giants, Billingsley is 6-2 with a 2.73 ERA.

San Francisco went 7-3 on a 10-game road trip before suffering last night's loss to the Dodgers. Barry Zitocontinued to struggle and his winless streak reached a career-high 12 outings. He has dropped seven straight starts and lasted 5 2/3 innings last night, striking out five and walking three. He allowed the only Los Angeles hit.

Relievers Santiago Casilla, Ramon Ramirez, Javier Lopez and Sergio Romo completed the one-hitter, but the results weren't satisfying. Freddy Sanchez recorded a game-best two hits in a losing cause.

"We've got to score," Giants manager Bruce Bochy told the team's site. "It wasn't pitching or really defense -- we've got to get runs on the board. We got shut out and that's the difference in the game."

Matt Cain will try make a difference when he takes the mound for Bochy's club tonight. Cain is 5-2 with a 2.96 earned run average in his last 11 starts, with the Giants going 9-2 in that span. The big righty recently limited the division-leading Padres to three runs in eight innings of last Thursday's 7-3 triumph at Petco Park. He struck out eight.

Cain, who improved to 11-10 in 29 starts this season, hasn't fared too well in his career against the Dodgers. He is just 1-8 in 16 starts and recorded his first win in the series back on August 1 when he blanked Los Angeles over 7 2/3 innings of a 2-0 victory.

The 2010 series between the Dodgers and Giants is tied at eight games apiece, while San Francisco is 5-2 over the past seven matchups.

San Francisco, CA (Sports Network) - Clayton Kershaw threw his first major league complete game, winning a tremendous pitchers' duel, as the Dodgers beat San Francisco, 1-0, despite collecting just one hit.

The Dodgers scored the only run in the sixth inning thanks to an error by shortstop Juan Uribe.

The slim victory by Los Angeles in the opener of the three-game series left the Giants 1 1/2 games behind division-leading San Diego in the NL West. The Padres squeaked past the Rockies, 7-6, earlier Tuesday.

Kershaw (12-10), who had lost his previous three decisions, scattered four hits and fanned four without walking a batter, as the Dodgers won for the third time in four games.

Barry Zito (8-13) set a career-high by losing his ninth straight decision. The lefty, who dropped his seven straight start and hasn't won since July 16 against the Mets, walked three and fanned five. The only hit the former AL Cy Young Award winner gave up was a single to Matt Kemp in the second inning, but he was caught trying to steal second.

Reed Johnson was hit by a pitch with one out in the sixth.
Sanchez singled with two outs in the ninth. The chants of "Beat LA!, Beat LA!" intensified as Darren Ford stood on first as a pinch-runner, but Aubrey Huff then struck out to end the game.

"The thing about Clayton was he was getting all his pitches over for strikes," Ross said. "He didn't really make too many mistakes. We just couldn't figure out a way to push one across."

It was the second time this season the Giants one-hit an opponent but lost. It also happened April 20 at San Diego...Kershaw threw 111 pitches, while Zito had 82...The Giants are 1 1/2 games behind Atlanta for the wild card lead.

(Sports Network) - Engaged in a battle for National League West bragging rights, the San Francisco Giants are counting on an upcoming homestand to bring them success. The residency starts with tonight's opener of a three-game series versus the division-rival Los Angeles Dodgers from AT&T Park.

The Giants will also host Milwaukee for three games and currently sit just a half-game behind San Diego for the top spot in the division standings. San Francisco just went 7-3 on a 10-game road trip and closed out the trek by winning three of four meetings with San Diego.

In Sunday's 6-1 victory in the series finale from Petco Park, two-time defending NL Cy Young Award honoree Tim Lincecum outdueled Padres young ace Mat Latos by tossing seven innings of one-run ball with nine strikeouts.Sergio Romo, Jeremy Affeldt and Brian Wilson went the rest of the way to preserve the big victory.

"We fought hard the whole trip," said San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy. "We had three series' in three tough cities and it's a credit to all our guys."

Buster Posey hit a two-run homer and Lincecum added a two-run single for the Giants, who have to be cringing with Barry Zito scheduled to take the mound in this evening's series opener. Zito is only 1-10 with a 5.11 earned run average over his past 17 games (16 starts) and has been on the losing end in six consecutive games, five of which have been starts.

Zito was dealt the loss in last Wednesday's 3-1 loss at Arizona and was tagged for two runs and four hits in six innings. The outing dropped his record to 8-12 in 30 games (29 starts) to go along with a 4.14 ERA. The lefty and 2002 AL Cy Young Award winner lost to the Dodgers on September 3, when he allowed four runs in four innings of a 4-2 decision.

He is 6-7 with a 4.01 ERA in 18 career starts against Los Angeles.

The Dodgers are 10 1/2 games off the NL West lead and have lost seven of their last nine contests. They just split a four-game set at Houston and suffered a 7-4 loss in Sunday's series finale, as starting pitcher Carlos Monasterios lasted just 1 1/3 innings and surrendered four runs -- three earned -- and five hits for the no-decision.

Ramon Troncoso allowed two runs in two innings of relief to absorb the loss for Los Angeles, which got a three-run homer from Jay Gibbons. The outfielder has five homers and 15 RBI since being called up from Triple-A in early August.

"He gets a good at-bat, even against the left-handers," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said of Gibbons. "He has a plan."

Torre hopes young starter Clayton Kershaw has a plan on gaining back his consistency when he toes the rubber Tuesday night. Kershaw is 0-3 in his last four starts and has dropped five of his last six decisions. He pitched well enough for the win in last Tuesday's 2-1 setback at San Diego, but was dealt the loss for giving up both runs through seven innings.

Kershaw had his 2010 record to drop 11-10 in 29 trips to the mound.

The left-hander is 0-1 in three starts against the Giants this season and lost to them on August 1. Kershaw is 0-1 with a 1.93 ERA in five career games (four starts) against the Giants.

San Francisco has won eight of 15 meetings with Los Angeles this season and is 5-1 in the six most recent contests in this series.
