Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Dan Hudson pitched seven solid innings and Stephen Drew fueled Arizona's offense, as the Diamondbacks took a 3-1 win over the San Francisco Giants to avoid being swept in the three-game series.

Hudson (5-1) gave up one run on five hits and two walks to get another win against the Giants. He took the victory back on August 28 after limiting San Francisco to two runs in seven innings.

Drew tripled and scored the decisive run in the third inning on Kelly Johnson's single. Drew added an RBI single in the seventh for Arizona, which snapped a four-game losing streak.

Barry Zito (8-12) limited Arizona to two runs in six innings, and struck out seven. But he still took the loss for a fifth straight start as the Giants had their four-game win streak broken.

San Francisco fell to two games behind Atlanta in the NL wild card chase, as the Braves beat Pittsburgh on Wednesday. The Giants also entered Wednesday's contest one game behind San Diego, which is playing Los Angeles, in the NL West standings.

Barry Zito has been, how you say ... not good this year. In fact, he's downright struggled a number of times, including in all of his recent outings. Outings that most Giants fans would love to forget, but probably cannot. One of the outings they'd probably do well to forget is his last time at the mound against ... you guessed it, the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Zito gave up nine runs and walked five before being called down from the mound after only 3 2/3 innings in the August 28th matchup at AT&T Park. He's lost five straight, and has lasted only up to or less than four innings in four of those five.

At the very least, the Diamondbacks as a whole are feeling from losses as well. Having lost two in a row at the hands of the Giants, and two just before this series on top of losing ten of their last twelve, they're not exactly carrying a wave of momentum into Zito and the Giants. They'll send out Dan Hudson to pitch, who picked up the win in his lone career start against the Giants, the aforementioned showdown with Zito on the 28th of August.

Everything was clicking for the Giants on Tuesday night in their win over the Dbacks. Tim Lincecum pitched a great ballgame, while getting run support from Aubrey Huff, Freddy Sanchez and Pat Burrell, who will look to build on that performance.

Zito has a lifetime record of three wins and seven losses with a 5.33 ERA over thirteen starts against the Diamondbacks.

Phoenix, AZ (Sports Network) - Tim Lincecum pitched solidly into the seventh inning and the San Francisco Giants used three home runs to defeat the Arizona Diamondbacks, 6-3, at Chase Field.

Lincecum (13-9) allowed three runs on five hits with 11 strikeouts for the Giants, who have captured the first two of this three-game series and moved within one-half game of the Padres for the lead in the tight NL West race.

The Padres are currently playing the Dodgers.

Pat Burrell and Aubrey Huff both hit a two-run homer while Freddy Sanchez added a solo blast in the victory.

Chris Young homered for the Diamondbacks, who have dropped four straight.

How do you like pitching duels? Monday's showdown in game one between the San Francisco Giants and the Arizona Diamondbacks was just that, a pitching duel that saw Giants starter Madison Bumgarner strikeout seven while relinquishing five hits over 7 1/3 shutout innings while Arizona's Ian Kennedy pitched eight shutout innings, striking out eight and allowing only two hits.

Are you ready for another one? The Giants send the hopefully-rebounding Tim Lincecum to the mound, up against Arizona's promising rookie Barry Enright. Lincecum has had a rather down year, but in his last outing he returned to form, with nine strikeouts over eight innings while relinquishing a single run. Lincecum had lost five straight starts with an ERA of 7.62 over those five.

One of those five came against the Diamondbacks just last month, on the 27th, where they took him for four runs and he gave up four walks in six innings. It most definitely was not a pretty outing.

Barry Enright is the Diamondbacks' answer to Lincecum. He's been sensational since being inserted into the Arizona lineup, posting a record of 6-2 with a 2.45 ERA over 12 starts. Enright was up against Lincecum on the 27th and picked up the win. The Giants are hoping it will be different this time around.

Aubrey Huff and Buster Posey both had hits late in the game on Monday, and put themselves into scoring position. Nate Schierholtz hit a triple into the gap in right center to end the scoring drought.

The Giants are that much closer to the playoffs with a win over the rival Diamondbacks on Monday afternoon. The Padres have yet to play at the time of writing, but you can bet what the players and fans will be doing on Monday night: watching the Padres game. The Giants pulled within a half-game of the division-leading Padres.

Madison Bumgarner continues to be impressive on the road, with a 5-2 record and 2.25 ERA in eight starts. He pitched seven shutout innings before being pulled in the eighth after a bad hit. He allowed five hits, fanning seven, and allowed one walk. Brian Wilson tied his career high save number with his 41st on the season. Santiago Casilla earned the win tonight.

Nate Schierholtz is the hero tonight, after a bad pickoff while pinch running earlier in the game. He hit a two-run triple in the 11th inning to put the Giants on top, and they stayed there. Aubrey Huff and Edgar Renteria each finished with a pair of hits for the Giants.

Some other notes from our Sports Network:

Wilson pitched around a leadoff walk in the home half to lock down the victory.

Neither team put a runner on third until the Diamondbacks threatened in the eighth.

Kennedy drove a Bumgarner pitch over the drawn-in outfield for a leadoff double and moved to third on Stephen Drew's deep fly ball. Sergio Romo relieved Bumgarner and walked pinch-hitter Ryan Church on four pitches, leading the Giants to put in Javier Lopez.

It's just as McCovey Chronicles said recently in a postgame thread, in which they had a satirical conversation between the San Diego Padres, San Francisco Giants, and even the Colorado Rockies. In said conversation, the Giants and Padres bickered over who would win the NL West crown. The Padres keep trying to give it up to the Giants, the Giants keep saying they don't want it, and the Rockies are just kind of there as well.

Every game is critical for the Giants, and this road trip in Arizona is right up there on the list of must-win games. They're within one game of the NL West lead, behind the Padres who are absolutely reeling at the moment. The Giants have won four of their last five, while the Padres have lost ten straight.

Jonathan Sanchez was sensational against the Dodgers on Sunday night, getting a first pitch strike on seemingly every pitch. He seemed to agree with the sentiments: "I was getting ahead on every hitter," Sanchez said. "When they take the first pitch, I took advantage of it and threw strikes. I'm working on my mechanics and feel I can go deep in the game."

The Giants can thank Juan Uribe for their wins against the Dodgers, hitting two two-run homers, one to give them a late win and one to give them and Sanchez some insurance.

In twelve games this season, the Giants have beaten the Diamondback eight times, including a four-game sweep the last time the two teams met in Arizona. Madison Bumgarner takes the mound for the Giants, looking to build on a good outing his last time out with a no-decision against the Rockies, in which he held them to one run on five hits through six innings.

Bumgarner played well during the Giants sweep of the Diamondbacks last time, getting the win on July 24th, but, aside from his last outing, was shaky from then on and of late. He's went 1-2 with a 5.17 ERA, though his road average is 3.76 and the Giants like him in this matchup.

Arizona, having taken seven of their last ten games, have picked up two of those three losses in recent back-to-back outings at home. Ian Kennedy will take the mound for the Diamondbacks and will look to earn his fourth win in his last five. He's playing very good baseball of late, though that 2.77 ERA over his last four isn't always the best indicator. Against the Giants this season, he's 1-1 with a 3.05 ERA.
