The Oakland Athletics are in Detroit with their sights on catching the Texas Rangers in the A.L. West, but they'll have their hands full as they face a Tigers team that is fighting to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.
The A's (84-62) will send right-hander A.J. Griffin (6-0, 1.94) to the hill. The 24-year-old is coming off a stellar performance against the Los Angeles Angels, in which he threw eight innings of six-hit shutout ball on his way to the win.
The Tigers will counter with Max Scherzer (16-6, 3.77), who has been a beast of late. The right-hander is 4-0 with a 1.25 ERA in his last five starts, and leads MLB in strikeouts with 220.
