The Oakland Athletics are, thus far, not enjoying their return to the O.co Coliseum. In the second game of a three-game series on Saturday, the A's could muster just one run for the second straight night, as they lost the the Cleveland Indians by a final score of 5-1.
The Indians got on the board right away in the top of the first inning, as Travis Hafner scored Jason Kipnis on an RBI groundout. The score stood 1-0 in favor of Cleveland until the top of the sixth inning, when Kipnis would record an RBI single.
The A's cut the Indians lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the sixth inning on a Yoenis Cespedes sacrifice fly, but that would be the extent of the Oakland offense.
The Tribe tacked on three insurance runs in the top of the eighth inning, on a two-run triple by Kipnis and a wild pitch from A's pitcher Brian Fuentes that allowed Kipnis to score.
The A's threatened in the bottom of the ninth, with a Jonny Gomes infield single and a huge Daric Barton double that came within inches of going out for a home run, but Kurt Suzuki struck out and Kila Ka'aihue flew out to center field to end the game.
Oakland starter Brandon McCarthy was the hard-luck loser, allowing two runs on 10 hits over seven innings, while walking three and striking out four. He wasn't able to receive enough run support, which was only compounded by Fuentes allowing three runs in one inning of work.
