Athletics Manage Only One Touchdown In 17-7 Loss To Yankees

The Oakland Athletics were decimated by the New York Yankees 17-7 Friday night, dropping their eleventh straight game against the Bronx Bombers. The A’s have struggled in recent memory against the Yankees and Friday was no exception. The A’s managed a 2-0 lead over the first two innings before things quickly fell apart and the Yankees found their spark.

The A’s looked to be on the right track early with a Scott Sizemore RBI double in the first inning followed by a Cliff Pennington RBI single in the second inning. However, Trevor Cahill quickly imploded as he gave up ten total runs, all earned, in the bottom of the second and third innings. Cahill was pulled with nobody out in the the third after giving up ten runs on nine hits and two walks. Although the Yankees piled together a lot of hits, the big one was Mark Teixeira’s grand slam that put the Yankees up 14-2.

The A’s attempted a comeback and actually cut the lead to 14-7 courtesy of a Cliff Pennington home run, a Coco Crisp single and a Jemile Weeks RBI single. Unfortunately the A’s couldn’t manage anything else and the Yankees added three more runs to complete the 17-7 defeat of Oakland.

The A’s and Yankees square off at 10:05am pacific Sunday as Oakland looks to snap the now 11-game losing streak to New York. Rich Harden will face A.J. Burnett on CSN California.
