The 2011 MLB Draft is officially complete and the Oakland Athletics have their 49 person haul. They've got a pitcher named Pitcher. They drafted Bob Geren's son. They spent most of the first two days drafting college talent, and then flipped over almost entirely to high school talent on day two.
I've posted a rundown of the A's 2011 draft class after the jump (courtesy of mlb.com) and here are some of the numbers. The A's drafted 21 pitchers (14 RHP, 7 LHP), 13 infielders although none are listed as first basemen (2 2B, 7 SS, 4 3B), and 11 outfielders (four centerfielders, seven corner outfielders).
Projecting from an MLB draft class is probably the hardest of the four major sports. In football, basketball, and hockey, players are inserted into the major league level fairly quickly, if not right away. It's incredibly rare for an MLB draft pick to be in the big leagues within a year, let alone right away. There are some exceptions, but for the most part, any of these soon to be minor leaguers that do make it to the big leagues are likely to spend at least a couple years in the minors, if not more.
As it currently stands, the highest any of these players is likely to be placed this year is Stockton, which is in the advanced A-ball California League. Primarily the players that sign and are assigned this year will be going to the short-season Vermont Lake Monsters of the New York-Penn League and the Burlington Bees of the Low A Midwest League. A good chunk will head down to Arizona to play for the AZL Athletics of the Arizona League.
