Athletics vs. Giants, Spring Training Scores: Brett Anderson, Joey Devine, Others Dominate Giants Batters

The Oakland Athletics pitching has been a bit up and down thus far in their 2011 Spring Training schedule, but today the A’s pitchers were clicking. Oakland defeated the San Francisco Giants 6-0 as six Athletics’ pitchers combined for a six hit shutout.

Brett Anderson opened things up with three innings of one-hit ball. Joey Devine went one inning and was followed by two innings of Fernando Cabrera. Gabe DeHoyos gave up two hits in his inning of work, Fautino De Los Santos gave up a hit and walk in 2/3 of an inning, and Brad Ziegler wrapped things up with 1 2/3 innings of work.

The Oakland offense benefited from Giants miscues as three of the six runs were unearned. The Giants committed four errors and suffered because of those miscues. The A’s did not have a single dominant hitter, but rather received contributions up and down the lineup. 2010 first round draft pick Michael Choice continued his strong spring going 2-for-4 and raising his spring batting average to .417. Jai Miller was hitless but walked twice in two plate appearances and managed a steal of home as one of his two runs scored.

The A’s have a pair of split squad games tomorrow as they host a split squad Brewers team in Phoenix and face a full squad Padres team in Peoria. Both games are at 12:05pm pacific.
