2012 NBA Draft Rumors: Damian Lillard To Workout With Hometown Warriors

The Golden State Warriors are expected to take a post player in the first round of the 2012 NBA Draft, but that will not stop them from weighing any and all options with the No. 7 pick. A recent story from Marcus Thompson of the Contra Costa Times reports that Weber State point guard, Damian Lillard, will do a private workout with the Warriors on Sunday.

Lillard is considered to be the top point guard in the class, although he really doesn't have much competition. His stock has risen in recent weeks though, and he could be a top-10 pick by the time it's all said and done.

Golden State officially announced the workout schedule for Sunday. The six-man group is not the real story. The real story is the seventh guy: Damian Lillard. He's going to wait until the six guys workout, then he's going to do a private workout for the Warriors - at Golden State's request.

The point guard from Weber State, who is from Oakland, is projected to go top 10. Could he be going No. 7 to the Warriors? Could the Warriors be sizing him up to see who wants him, and maybe use him as trade bait? Or do they know they don't want him but want to do their due diligence on the prospects in their backyard?

The article speculates a potential draft-and-trade deal with the Portland Trail Blazers in order to bring a power forward such as J.J. Hickson to Golden State, although that was all just a guess from Thompson.

It doesn't appear that Lillard is a legitimate fit for the Warriors at No. 7, but the fact that they're working him out says something. A team should keep all of their options open on draft night, and that's exactly what the W's are doing.
