Falling behind the St. Louis Cardinals by six runs in the fourth inning was too big of a deficit for the San Francisco Giants to overcome in the opening game of the National League Championship Series. They rallied for four runs in the bottom half of the fourth, but could get no closer, dropping the game 6-4.

Giants starter Madison Bumgarner lasted just 3 innings in the contest, allowing all six runs on eight hits, two of which were home runs, and one walk. The Giants bullpen threw 5 innings of scoreless ball in relief of Bumgarner, but the bats were not able to match the effort.

Ryan Vogelsong will be on the mound for San Francisco in Game 2, facing Chris Carpenter of the Cardinals. Vogelsong made his postseason debut last Tuesday in the NLDS against the Cincinnati Reds, allowing just one run in 5 innings of work. The Giants won the game, 2-1, in 10 innings. The right-hander excels at AT&T Park, compiling a 2.86 ERA at home this season versus a 3.87 mark on the road.
