2011 National Signing Day: San Jose State Locks In National Letters of Intent

The San Jose State Spartans wrapped up most of their 2011 National Signing Day class with a pair of three star recruits. The class was highlighted by quarterback Joseph Gray and defensive back Mercy Maston. Although they don’t have big names coming to town, the Spartans did have some success in their planned effort to focus on California prospects. California is a hotbed of football talent and it makes sense for SJSU to spend their recruiting dollars in their own backyard.

While transfer QB Matt Faulkner will likely be the starting QB, Joe Gray will compete with Brandon Rutley and Dasmen Stewart for backup snaps. At defensive back, Peyton Thompson and Brandon Driver would appear to be the starting cornerbacks next year. There is a whole host of rising sophomores and juniors that will compete for backup time. Given the rebuilding nature of San Jose State, Mercy Maston will likely get a shot at some playing time early on.
