The Stanford Cardinal announced their 2011 National Signing Day haul and in spite of losing head coach Jim Harbaugh three weeks before signing day, the Cardinal have still brought in an impressive haul. The class is highlighted by linebacker James Vaughters and safety Wayne Lyons, both of whom are in the top 75 of ESPNU’s rankings.
A review of Scout, Rivals and ESPNU shows a class ranked 22nd, 26th, and 20th respectively. Although the team had some defections after Jim Harbaugh left for the 49ers, they retained a sizable chunk of their class. This 2011 recruiting class brings some serious depth, particularly to the defensive side of the ball.
Stanford coach David Shaw took some time to discuss this class of incoming freshman and what they mean for the team going forward. Naturally the first question was about the change in the coaching staff. Shaw answered it well in discussing the carry over amongst the staff that was already in place (such as himself).
