This weekend's game between the California Golden Bears and Arizona State Sun Devils may not look like a huge matchup on paper, but it has big implications on both the Pac-12 South race and bowl bids.
The Bears are playing to get a shot at a big-time bowl game come December. With the team already eligible for a bid, a road win over a quality opponent in ASU would be a huge boost for the resumé. With multiple members of various bowl committees in attendance on Saturday night, a big game from the Bears could earn them a spot in a primetime matchup.
For the Sun Devils, a disastrous second half of the season has them clinging to a small chance at representing the Pac-12 South in the conference championship game. A win is required if they hope to reach the championship, though if the last few weeks are any indication, that is much easier said than done. The defense is in shambles right now and many in Tempe are calling for head coach Dennis Erickson's resignation.
Expect a great game and atmosphere on Saturday. It may not get a huge billing from the national media, but it's a crucial game for both programs.
