The California Golden Bears suffered a loss to the No. 12 ranked Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon, but the Golden Bears faithful weren't too displeased that their team dropped the seven-point decision. It should continue getting better, too, considering the Golden Bears shouldn't have to worry about injuries stemming from this weekend's road trip.

Neither team suffered any noticeable injuries on Saturday afternoon, meaning Cal only has to worry about injuries they've already been dealing with -- particularly tight end Richard Rodgers, offensive lineman Matt Summers-Gavin and linebacker Khairi Fortt, all of which missed Saturday's game but could return next week against the USC Trojans.

As far as Ohio State is concerned, they were without a pair of running backs on Saturday as Adam Homan and Carlos Hyde both watched from the sidelines whereas defensive lineman Michael Bennett also was inactive. The Buckeyes didn't report any new injuries, however, which bodes well for their future as well.

The Oakland Raiders and Miami Dolphins are battled their way through a defensive struggle in the first half on Sunday afternoon and, after 15 minutes of action, the Raiders took a 10-7 lead into the halftime locker room. The Raiders offense has been far from outstanding, but Carson Palmer was able to connect with Mike Goodson for a 64-yard pass and catch touchdown out of the backfield on the biggest play of the first half.

Palmer was far from outstanding in the first half, but a few big plays helped him put up excellent numbers as he completed 13 of his 25 passes for 239 yards and the aforementioned touchdown run. Palmer was also able to lead a nice drive late in the second quarter, but it ended short with a Sebastian Janikowski field goal.

The Dolphins' only score of the first half came when rookie quarterback Ryan Tannehill was able to sneak the ball across the goal line for a two-yard touchdown run. Tannehill completed just nine of his 19 pass attempts for a total of 85 yards before halftime.

The California Golden Bears suffered a seven-point defeat at the hands of the Ohio State Buckeyes on Saturday afternoon, but Cal wasn't expected to win the game anyway -- especially on the road. That said, the loss was expected but not necessarily disappointing for the Golden Bears' fans.

Cal has slowly but surely been showing more promise and the fans have taken notice of it -- particularly our friends over at California Golden Blogs. Avinash Kunnath wrote in his recap that the Golden Bears are showing improvement and, despite the loss, Saturday's game was pretty positive otherwise.

College football is a funny thing when you overachieve and come up short. You sort of feel mad that you didn't grab the win, you're kind of irritated at the questionable decisions, but in the end you brush it off and move on because things look better today than they did yesterday. I'm really more encouraged that we can get back to bowl eligibility than I was last week, and feel real better about out future considering how many youngsters are contributing and producing already.

The Golden Bears are going to have to string together victories in order to really show their improving, but it's quite promising that Cal fans are noticing that their football team is getting better at doing the little things.

The Stanford Cardinal picked up a huge victory over the USC Trojans on Saturday night, helping them out quite a bit in the college football rankings. Stanford did get a bit lucky when it came to the injury report, however, as USC definitely left the game worse for the wear.

There weren't any injuries to report for the Cardinal following Saturday night's victory -- though offensive tackle Cole Underwood is still out for the season and fullback Geoff Meinken has yet to return -- but the USC injury report was quite extensive.

The Trojans lost running backs Silas Redd and Curtis McNeal during the game, which was obviously a point of emphasis on Saturday night. The Trojans were also missing centers Khaled Holmes and Abe Markowitz along with kicker Andre Heidari, tight end Christian Thomas. Yet another running back, D.J. Morgan, didn't play on Saturday either.

Considering USC's policy on injury updates, there's no reason to expect new news on these injuries anytime soon.

The Stanford Cardinal were able to upset the USC Trojans on Saturday night for the fourth time in four tries and, as expected, the Cardinal faithful are pretty excited about once again taking care of business against their rivals. This time was particularly special, however, because the Cardinal didn't need Andrew Luck to do it -- and the Trojans still had Matt Barkley.

Stanford picked up the victory with first-year starter Josh Nunes at the helm of the offense, but our friends over at the Rule Of Tree were more excited about their ability to make USC's offense struggle.

For the first time in school history, Stanford has defeated USC four consecutive times. The Stanford defense played out of its collective mind in tonight's 21-14 win, sacking Golden Boy Matt Barkley five times, picking him off twice, and limiting his vaunted receiving duo to nine catches, 149 yards and zero touchdowns. USC was 1-for-13 -- 1 FOR 13! -- on third downs and managed only 26 yards rushing.

It was obviously a huge victory for Stanford -- they're now ranked ahead of USC in both the USA Today Coaches poll as well the Associated Press' weekly rankings -- and there will likely be even more celebrating coming from Stanford thoughout the early portion of this week.

All signs point to Mike Brown being the Golden State Warriors next head coach, ESPN's Ric Bucher reported today in his weekly Friday chat.

Lakers assistant coaches Chuck Person and Brian Shaw "are serious about getting the job and will be interviewed. But all signs point to Mike Brown being the Warriors next head coach," Bucher wrote in response to a question from one of his readers.

Brown was the 2008-09 NBA Coach of the Year andcoached the Cleveland Cavaliers to 272-138 record over the course of five seasons, but was let go prior to last season and became an analyst for ESPN.

Brown's resume looks pretty solid, but it must say something that he was able to get a LeBron James led team to the NBA Finals just once in five seasons and reached the Eastern Conference Finals just one other season despite advancing to the NBA Playoffs each year as head coach.

Prior to his job with the Cavs, Brown's only NBA head coaching experience, the 41-year-old was an assistant with the Indiana Pacers and San Antonio Spurs.

Gio Gonzalez, the surprising stud pitcher for the Oakland Athletics this season, went into Wednesday afternoon’s game against the Boston Red Sox with an MLB-leading 0.47 ERA. Six innings and one loss later, however, Gonzalez has a 1.80 ERA two homers in the A’s 5-3 loss in the rain.

Coco Crisp gave the A’s a one-run lead when he hit a pitch from Red Sox pitcher Clay Bucholz over the right field fence in the bottom of the first inning — his first of the season — but Boston answered by scoring five unanswered runs over the next six innings, four of them being charged to Gonzalez.

While Gonzalez’s outing wasn’t what the Oakland faithful had come to expect from him this season (despite striking out nine batters), the biggest problem for the Athletics was probably the fact that they left 15 runners on base and hit just 3-for-15 with runners in scoring position.

While the A’s are still a respectable 9-9, it marked just the first victory for the Red Sox away from Fenway to split the series.

The Oakland Raiders hired Hue Jackson to take over as head coach on Monday after serving this past season as the offensive coordinator. Jackson replaces Tom Cable, who was let go after the season when the team didn't pick up the final two years of his option.

The Raiders have announced that the hiring will be made official in a press conference Tuesday.

This past season, the Raiders ranked 10th in the NFL in yards per game as they averaged 354.6, but the new running attack was the most noticeable change since Jackson came aboard.

Led by Darren McFadden and Michael Bush, the Raiders amassed 2,494 yards on the ground — the second highest total in the league as they trailed only the Kansas City Chiefs. The passing attack still needs work, however, as the Raiders finished 23rd in the league in the air.

Jackson has never been a head coach in the past, but the Raiders are adding someone very familiar with how to run an offense as the 45-year-old has previously served as USC’s offensive coordinator, the Washington Redskins offensive coordinator and the Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator.

He also served as the Cincinnati Bengals wide receivers coach from 2004-2006 when the team boasted Chad Ochocinco, T.J. Houshmandzadeh and the late Chris Henry as well as the Baltimore Ravens quarterback coach during Joe Flacco’s rookie season.

After Darren McFadden’s performance through the first few weeks of the NFL preseason, it looked like he had finally been able to kick the injury bug that plagued him through the first few seasons of his career.

Unfortunately, that was unable to last as McFadden has been ruled out this weekend due to the hamstring injury he sustained before halftime in last week’s game according to ESPN’s John Clayton.

Also, linebacker Quentin Groves and cornerback Walter McFadden are questionable with hamstring injuries.

Wide receiver Chaz Schilens (knee), linebacker Travis Goethel (back), linebacker Thomas Howard (knee) and defensive tackle John Henderson (foot) have also been scratched.
