NFL Mock Draft 2013: Raiders will have pick of top d-line talent

New, 1 comment

The Oakland Raiders will have a pick of top defensive line talent with their No. 3 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft, if they elect to go that route.

The Oakland Raiders were expected to be a much better team in 2012, with a new regime that would play to the team's strengths. As it turned out, the offense didn't suit the personnel at all and the defense looked lethargic. The team will look back to the NFL Draft to try and snag some good talent.

This time around, they actually have a first-round pick, which has been something of a rarity lately. It's likely that many of their offensive issues can be remedied with an altering of the scheme, so they could look to address some defensive needs with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Dan Kadar of SB Nation released his latest mock draft on Monday, and he has the Raiders doing just that, taking Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore at No. 3:

Not only did Raiders defensive end Matt Shaughnessy have a poor season with just 3.5 sacks, but he's an impending free agent. By adding Moore, the Raiders can be more aggressive on defense, but not lose much in run defense. There has been some speculation that the Raiders may be looking at a quarterback here, so look for that to gain momentum the next couple of months.

Oakland has had strong defensive line play over the past few seasons, and it's been one of the few things that has kept them in tight games. Unfortunately, Richard Seymour is getting up there in years and yes, Shaughnessy did have a rough season in 2012.

As usual, the top end of the draft is full of top defensive line talent, and the Raiders will likely have their pick of top players. They need help rushing from the edge and they need some big bodies in the middle, so it wouldn't be surprising at all to see them go this route.
