2013 Super Bowl: 49ers' advance opens up multiple spots in Pro Bowl

The San Francisco 49ers opened up a bunch of spots in the 2013 Pro Bowl by advancing to Super Bowl XLVII.

USA TODAY Sports

The San Francisco 49ers are going to take on the Baltimore Ravens in Super Bowl XLVII, if you're just catching up. They managed to beat the Atlanta Falcons, coming back in the second half to secure the victory. The Ravens, meanwhile, dominated the New England Patriots in the AFC Championship to secure their berth.

But before we're graced with the big dance, the 2013 Pro Bowl is up first. And that Pro Bowl now has quite a few ... absences following the championship round.

Players who were scheduled to play in the Pro Bowl obviously cannot take time away from their Super Bowl preparations to play in the game, so all of the players from San Francisco and Baltimore have vacated their spots. They still get credit for being named Pro Bowlers, but it's a pretty big list.

On San Francisco's side alone, there were seven starters, two reserves and eight alternates named. They're listed below:

ILB NaVorro Bowman, OT Joe Staley , FS Dashon Goldson, SS Donte Whitner, RB Frank Gore, OLB Aldon Smith, DT Justin Smith, OGMike Iupati, ILB Patrick Willis, OG Alex Boone, OLB Ahmad Brooks, OT Anthony Davis, TE Vernon Davis, C Jonathan Goodwin, P Andy Lee, CB Carlos Rogers, ST C.J. Spillman.

So there you have it. The starters and reserves immediately give up their spots, and the alternates will be removed from that list, so anybody who was named an alternate after them will get the nod in the event of other players dropping out.
