Also in the men's singles draw is third-seeded Andy Murray, who takes on the No. 30 seed Feliciano Lopez. Both matches will take place before prime time but no earlier than 10 a.m. PT.
In the women's singles draw, Serena Williams, seeded fourth, has a match against unranked Ekaterina Makarova, taking place before Federer's match.
The Bay Area has a representative in the field at the U.S. Open. San Francisco native Sam Querrey, seeded No. 27, has a match against sixth-seed Tomas Berdych, also taking place before primetime but after 10 a.m.
