The United States now holds a lead in the overall medal count following day six of action. Team USA has trailed China throughout the opening week of the 2012 Olympics, but they had a huge day on Thursday to propel them to the top of the leaderboard.
The US now has 37 total medals. 18 of them are gold, nine are silver and 10 are bronze. China is in second place with 34 medals; 18 of them are gold, 11 are silver and five are bronze. It looks like these two countries will battle atop the leaderboard for days to come.
Japan is a distant third place with 19 medals, 11 of which are bronze. Germany and Russia are currently tied in fourth place with 17 total medals.
