American swimmer Rebecca Soni set a new world record in the 200 meter breaststroke on Wednesday in the semi-final race, and broke it once again on Thursday in the final as she claimed the gold medal at the 2012 Olympic games in London.
Soni finished the race in 2 minutes, 19.59 seconds to improve on her own mark from the semis by 0.41 seconds. It marked the sixth world record set in the pool at the London games thus far.
Satomi Suzuki of Japan finished in 2:20.72 to take the silver medal, while Iuliia Efimova of Russia finished in 2:20.92 for bronze.
Soni was also favored to win the 100 breast, but eventually took the silver behind15-year-old winner Ruta Meilutyte of Lithuania.
