After the 'fab five' made history by taking the women's gymnastics team competition earlier this week, Americans Gabby Douglas and Aly Raisman were looking for individual glory in the all-around competition. But when it was all said and done, it was Gabby Douglas taking home the gold, earning her second Olympic gold medal of the 2012 London Summer Games.
Douglas scored 15.500 or higher in her first three rotations of the day on Thursday, making a big splash with an impressive15.966 score on her vault. Douglas had the lead with 47.199 points entering the fourth and final rotation, performing the most important floor exercise of her life to claim the title.
Russia's Victoria Komova would claim the silver medal with 46.873 points, followed by teammate Aliya Mustafina with 44.966 to take home the bronze. Both put the pressure on Douglas with impressive floor routines as well, but Douglas fended them off for the gold.
Aly Raisman was in fifth place heading into the final rotation after shaky performances on the parallel bars and balance beam. Her score of 15.133 on the floor exercise brought her oh so close to claiming a medal, though Komova and Mustafina edged her out of a trip to the podium.
