2012 Olympics Medal Count: Jessica Hardy, Natalie Coughlin Help U.S. Move Into Second Place

Sunday will kick off the second day of the 2012 Olympic Games in London. Entering the day's events, the United States is in a tie with Italy for second place in the total medals tally.

Heading into Sunday's events, China currently leads all countries with four total medals and four gold medals. The United States and Italy are tied with five total medals.

Brazil, Korea and Japan each have three medals and Japan is the only one of those three countries without a gold medal. No other country has more than one medal.

Bay Area swimmers Jessica Hardy and Natalie Coughlin were both members of the women's team that captured the bronze in the 4x100m freestyle relay, one of the four U.S. medals in swimming (the fifth was a silver medal in archery). Hardy and Coughlin both attended Cal Berkeley and Coughlin is a Bay Area native, having been born in Vallejo.
