London 2012 Olympics: Italians Take Gold, Silver And Bronze Medals In Women's Fencing Individual Foil

The Italians swept the podium in the Women's Fencing Individual Foil event on Saturday, securing all three medals. Elisa Di Francisca took Gold, Arianna Errigo took Silver, and Valentina Vezzali rounded things out with the Bronze medal. Lee Kiefer was the most successful American in the event, making it to the quarter finals before losing to Errigo.

Kiefer is only 18, and shows skill well beyond her age. She sees her early success as a road to bigger things, as she told NBC Olympics:

“I got third at the World Championships last season and that gave me more confidence that I’ve got a better chance of doing this. I’m not at my full potential and I know there’s stuff I can still work on, so it’s good to have that potential for the next quad.”

Kiefer will go on to compete in the Women's Team Foil event, taking place Thursday Aug. 2.
