Bay Area native Sam Querrey is making his presence felt at the Championships Wimbledon in 2012 after taking out No. 21 ranked Milos Raonic to advance to the third round of the tournament on Friday.
Last year at this time Querrey was having surgery on his elbow, watching his name slowly slide down the professional ranks. Now he's back on the biggest stage at the All England Club with some momentum to boot. Querrey smashed 21 aces en route to his 6-7 (3), 7-6 (7), 7-6 (8), 6-4 victory. The match was suspended because of darkness the night before in the middle of the third set.
After the match, Querrey discussed the importance of this victory for him, not just in this event but for his career as a whole:
"Usually I'm pretty calm and collected after a win or loss, but, yeah, kind of let it out there a little bit at the end. It just felt good," said Querrey, who used to be a member of the top 20 and is currently 64th.
"I was out for a while, and I feel like I'm coming back. Ranking is moving up," he added. "Just nice to be in the third round of a Slam again."
Querrey has just one more test before he can enter get to the round of 16. He'll take on No. 16 Marin Cilic of Croatia in his next match.
