Sporting News' Clifton Brown has assembled his offseason NFL Coaches Power Rankings and San Francisco 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh debuts on the list at #6. Brown explains:
6. Jim Harbaugh, San Francisco 49ers - He went to the NFC championship game in his first season. The success he had in college is translating to the NFL. Overall record (1 year): 13-3. Playoff record: 1-1.
I can't say I disagree with the assessment - Harbaugh came in, made some smart roster moves on offense, and installed a Power Run system that QB Alex Smith could thrive in. On defense, he retained a few key players and added a couple more, and took a foundering Niners franchise that hadn't made it to the playoffs in nearly a decade, went 13-3, and took New York to overtime before narrowly missing a chance at the Super Bowl.
Harbaugh still has a lot to prove, but in one year he righted the ship. Let's see if he can keep it going.
