Bay To Breakers 2012 Preview: Runners Prepare For Famous 12k Race

The 101st Bay To Breakers cross-city race takes place this Sunday, May 20th 2012 in San Francisco. The 12k race begins in the northeast (bay) section of San Francisco and ends on the west side of the city at the "breakers" of Ocean Beach. The Zazzle Bay To Breakers race is one of the world's largest and oldest footraces.

Ridouane Harroufi (Morocco) and Lineth Chepkurui (Kenya) were the men's and women's division race winners respectively in 2011. Harroufi finished at 34:25 while Chepkurui's winning time was 39:12. Chepkuri set the women's course record at 38:07 in 2010. The men's record was set in 2009 by Sammy Kitwara (Kenya) at 33:31.

Two Bay Area natives also placed in the top ten of their respective divisions, Magdalena Lewy-Boulet from Oakland, CA finished sixth overall among women with a time of 41:26. On the men's side, San Francisco's own Boloto Asmerom finished eighth overall with a time of 36:40.
