As expected, the No. 7 seed Fresno State Bulldogs and No. 8 seed San Jose State Spartans were eliminated in the first round of the 2012 WAC Basketball Tournament. Here is a recap of quarterfinal action.
Fresno State saw their season end with a 65-49 loss to the New Mexico State Aggies. Junior forward Kevin Foster scored 14 points to lead the Bulldogs, however the WAC's leading scorer, Wendell McKines, led the Aggies with 15 points and 13 rebounds.
The San Jose Spartans fell to the No. 1 seeded Nevada Wolfpack 54-44. The Spartans were able to give Nevada a scare, holding a lead with as little as 12 minutes remianing, however the talent of the Wolfpack was too much for San Jose State to handel. The Spartans shot just 32.8 percent from the field, the fifth consecutive game in which they failed to make at least 40 percent of their field goals.
In other action, Hawaii was able to upset Idaho, 72-70. Idaho was able to claw back from an 11-point deficit in the first half, but was not able to complete the comeback. Hawaii's Vander Joaquim led all scorers with 20 points.
Louisiana Tech was also able to pick up an upset with a final score of 72-70, as they were able to take down Utah State. Danny Berger came off the bench for Utah State to score a game-high 17 points and shoot 3-of-3 from behind the arc, however it was not enough to move on to the semifinals.
