NASCAR Phoenix Results: Denny Hamlin Takes Checkered Flag, Jeff Gordon Finishes 8th

The Subway Fresh Fit 500 took place on Sunday at the Phoenix International Raceway in Arizona. The second race of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series saw far fewer crashes than the Daytona 500 a week earlier, including remarkably fewer instances of a jet drier bursting into flame.

Bay Area drivers Jeff Gordon and A.J. Allmendinger both took part in the race. Allmendinger had much better placement in the starting grid, but did not end up having as good a race as Gordon. Although Allmendinger entered the race in the No. 16 slot in the starting grid, he finished the race in 18th place. Gordon started in the No. 30 slot but finished eighth.

The race was ultimately won by Denny Hamlin, who held off Kevin Harvick to take the checkered flag. Hamlin came in fourth in the Daytona 500 and is now in first place in the Sprint Cup standings with 89 points. Gordon is in 22nd place overall with 42 points, while Allmendinger is in 25th place with 36 points.
