The fourth NASCAR race of the year was held on Sunday, as the Food City 500 at Bristol Motor Speedway became the first short-track race of the 2012 Sprint Cup Series. Bay Area native A.J. Allmendinger looked poised for a top-10 finish at the very least, before problems with his car forced him to make an unscheduled stop in pit road and lost valuable time and laps. Allmendinger manager to finish 17th, but the result was a disappointment following his strong start before the car troubles. The finish is still the highest placing of the year for the driver, who is currently 26th in the overall Sprint Cup standings.
Fellow Bay Area native Jeff Gordon did not fare quite so well, finishing in 35th place after he was inadvertently wrecked by Hendrick Motorsports teammate on lap 363. Gordon is now 23rd in the Sprint Cup standings.
Brad Keselowski took the checkered flag in his second straight win at Bristol. Greg Biffle, Keven Harvick and Matt Kenseth are still the top three leaders, respectively, in the Sprint Cup standings.
