The 49ers bring a new face into the Edward Jones Dome to face the St. Louis Rams in Week 13. Head coach Jim Harbaugh has announced that second-year quarterback Colin Kaepernick will start for San Francisco, leaving a healthy Alex Smith on the bench. Kaepernick started two weeks ago when Smith was suffering from a concussion and has taken the league by storm, winning games against the Bears and New Orleans.
The Rams faced a Smith-led 49ers team in Week 10 and fought them to a 24-24 tie. Since then St. Louis lost 27-13 to the Jets and defeated the Cardinals 31-17, giving them a 4-6-1 record overall. Quarterback Sam Bradford has been underwhelming, throwing 14 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 11 games. He will have his hands full with a 49ers defense that is the best in the NFL at preventing scoring, just 14.1 points per game.
The 8-2-1 49ers have a 2.5 game lead over the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC West. The Rams (3-0-1) and the 49ers (2-0-1) are both undefeated in division play.
The 49ers are 7-1-1 in their last nine games against the Rams, dating back to 2008.
