49ers working out kickers as David Akers struggles?

San Francisco is weighing any and all options as the playoffs near.

Kirby Lee-US PRESSWIRE

This time last year, 49ers kicker David Akers was closing in on NFL records. Now, as the team continues making preparations for the final month of the regular season, one report claims the team was working out kickers on Tuesday.

According to Kyle Bonagura of CBS Sports, place kickers are now trying out for the 49ers. Bonagura was unable to determine who the kickers were.

Akers has really struggled this season. He's converted just 19 of his 27 field goal attempts, which is only a 70.4 percent clip. That's unacceptable for an NFL kicker, and it's easy to see why the 49ers would at least consider a change. In 2011, Akers hit 44 of his 52 field goal attempts, including 20 from 40 yards out or beyond. The soon-to-be 38-year-old kicker has a 81.5 percent accuracy rating for his career, and it appears he may finally be nearing the end of the road.

Will the 49ers make a change, or do they stick with Akers throughout the rest of the season? It seems likely a decision will be made in the near future.
