Bowling, anyone? Lost in the hysteria of the Notre Dame win was a pretty good football game between two 9-2 schools, San Jose State and Louisiana Tech. In a day full of rivalries, this contest didn't have 'instant classic' written all over it. Instead, it was a high scoring bout with the teams trading scoring opportunities up through the final minutes of game. San Jose State ended up the victor, 52-43.
In the first quarter, San Jose State took the early lead, 10-0. With three minutes left in the quarter, Louisiana Tech's Kenneth Dixon rushed for an eight yard touchdown and kicker Matt Nelson missed the extra point, leaving the Bulldogs down, 10-6.
The shooting gallery opened the second as both teams traded scoring chances through out the quarter. One minute in, San Jose quarterback David Fales completed an 18 yard pass to Ryan Otten for the TD, kicker Austin Lopez hit the extra point. Lopez made all seven of his field goal attempts in the game. Minutes later, LA Tech's Malon Lee caught a 15 yard pass for the touchdown and a successful point after. Four minutes later, San Jose answered the bell on a one yard De'Leon Eskridge rush. With the Spartans only up by nine points, LA Tech scored the next two touchdowns to close out the half and go into the locker room ahead, 27-24.
The third quarter was much like the second. First the Bulldogs hit a field goal, extending their lead to 30-24. At the 8:24 mark, SJSU's Ina Liaina ran for a four yard TD, putting the Spartans back on top 31-30. Less than a minute later, Myles White caught a 33 yard long pass from Colby Cameron bringing Louisiana Tech ahead, again, 37-31. Slightly over a minute after that, SJSU's Eskridge scored his second TD of the game. The quarter ended with San Jose on top, 37-38.
To open the fourth quarter, Eskridge earned a touchdown hat trick, extending San Jose's lead to 37-45. Midway through the quarter, LA Tech QB Cameron completed a 10 yard throw to Quinton Patton for a touchdown. The two would attempt to hook up again on the two-point play and failed. SJSU still ahead, 43-45. The Spartans iced the game with 7:40 left to go on a 26 yard Fales to Jabari Carr pass for the touchdown and extra point. Game ends 43-52 and San Jose gets its 10th win of the season.
