BCS Standings 2012, Week 12: Kansas State, Oregon on a collision course

Alabama's loss leaves an opening for the Oregon Ducks, who jump into the #2 spot in the latest BCS rankings.

Alabama's loss to Texas A&M stunned the college football world, and left a lot of intrigue regarding the new BCS standings released on Sunday night. The Oregon Ducks jumped to #1 in both human polls, but would it be enough to finally jump into the elusive top two of the BCS standings? Would it be enough to vault the Kansas State Wildcats for the top spot?

In the end, it was Kansas State who filled the void at the top, riding their strength in the computer rankings to override Oregon's advantage in the human polls. The Ducks did jump up to #2, ending fears that they could be left out of the BCS National Championship Game even if they finish with an unblemished record. Notre Dame ascends to #3, .10 behind Oregon, but with an upcoming strength of schedule significantly weaker than the Ducks' . This makes it likely that Oregon or Kansas State would need to lose for the Fighting Irish to have a chance to play for a title.

While the SEC is not currently slated for a spot in the championship game, they do occupy the #4-#9 slots in the BCS rankings, starting with Alabama at #4. Oregon leads five Pac-12 teams in the top-25, with the Stanford Cardinal checking in at #13.
