The Chesapeake Bay region may have to wait before acquiring another professional basketball team. Voters in Virginia Beach, Virginia were polled this week about the possibility of the Kings relocating from Sacramento to their hometown. The poll was conducted by the Virginia-Pilot newspaper, Christopher Newport University and WVEC-TV, and the results were less than positive. Just 38 percent of those polled were in favor of a new arena, with 45 percent opposed. When asked about public money being used for the potential arena, residents scoffed to the tune of a 58 percent disapproval rating.
The Kings have been in talks to leave Sacramento for some time, with ownership spurning the idea of a new downtown arena in their current home. And while it appears the Kings won't stay put in Sacramento, where they have been since 1985, it seems equally likely that they will not end up in Virginia Beach.
