Santa Clara Vs. Pepperdine: Can Denzel Johnson Pick Up Where He Left Off?

The Santa Clara Broncos continue their search for that elusive first conference victory as they head down to Pepperdine to face the Waves Sunday evening at 7:00pm PT. The Broncos are currently 0-7 in conference and in the midst of an eight-game losing streak. Leading scorer Kevin Foster remains indefinitely suspended while he goes through the university's student discipline process for a rules violation, which leaves the Broncos scrambling for help.

They may have found an intriguing possibility in freshman guard Denzel Johnson. In Thursday's loss to the San Francisco Dons, Johnson scored a career-high 26 points on 12-of-18 shooting. Just to put in perspective how surprising this was, prior to Thursday, Johnson had scored 20 points on the season and attempted 38 total shots. It is safe to say Pepperdine will be keeping an eye on the freshman throughout the game.

Pepperdine is only one win ahead of Santa Clara, sitting at 1-8 in conference and 7-13 overall. The Waves are led by Taylor Darby who is scoring 11.6 points per game and hauling in 6.1 rebounds per game. Corbin Moore leads the team with 8.5 rebounds per game and is second on the team with 9.8 points per game.
