Linebacker Aaron Maybin, whose agent expressed interest in the 49ers earlier today, has decided to go in a different direction, according to Matt Maiocco. The third-year player was cut by the Buffalo Bills on Monday and is looking for a new team for the upcoming season.
Maybin was the 11th overall pick in the 2009 NFL Draft. He was a great pass rusher at Penn State, but has had trouble translating his rushing abilities to the NFL. In his two seasons, Maybin has recorded a total of 24 tackles and one forced fumble. Noticeably missing from those stats, however, is sacks. Maybin has yet to record his first NFL sack through 27 NFL games.
The 49ers don't have a glaring need at linebacker since they do have Parys Haralson and Aldon Smith. The team did cut third string linebacker Thaddeus Gibson on Monday, though it appears that he will be replaced with new addition Antawn Applewhite. The 49ers will look to address a more pressing need at quarterback as the preseason continues.
