Daunte Culpepper Reportedly Working Out With 49ers

It looks like Jim Harbaugh saw enough from the first preseason performance by the San Francisco 49ers to reconsider his commitment to Alex Smith and Colin Kaepernick as his one-two combo at quarterback. Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk reports via a league source that NFL veteran Daunte Culpepper is going to or is currently working out with the Niners.

Culpepper's best days are over a half-decade ago. His heyday was with the Minnesota Vikings, when he teamed up with Randy Moss to provide one of the most devastating QB-WR combos in NFL history. But he struggled in his final season and then suffered a serious knee injury that started his decline out of the league. He hovered in stints with the Miami Dolphins, Oakland Raiders and Detroit Lions before spending the last season in the UFL.

But the Niners definitely could use a hand. Smith is still an unrestricted free agent and Kaepernick is unrestricted in his vigorous youth. Culpepper at least provides a veteran presence, although his touchdown to interception ratio currently hovers under one.
