49ers Positional Battles: Kyle Williams Looking Ready, Ronald Johnson Searching

The San Francisco 49ers didn't start their preseason they way they had hoped last night against the Saints, but there were some bright spots to take away from the 24-3 loss. One of the standouts during the game for the Niners was wide receiver Kyle Williams, while some of the the other WR's certainly were working out some growing pains still.

Williams led all San Francisco receivers with two catches for 34 yards, with on of those receptions for 25 yards. Those numbers don' sound outstanding by any means (eve in a preseason game), but considering the sputtering nature of their offense last night these numbers were a bit of s silver lining. With Mike Crabtree sidelined with a fot injury and Braylon Edwards still learning his way around the Niners offense, guys like Kyle Williams and Josh Morgan (DNP last night) are going to have to step up and help Colin Kaepernick and Alex Smith get  comfortable.

One WR the really struggled last night was rookie Ronald Johnson. He caught zero passes for zero yards although he was targeted seven times. Kaep and Smith didn't shine at the QB postion either, but Johnson has got to haul in some balls if he is getting targeted that much. Johnson did return two punts for 27 yards, a place where he might have the most impact on the team this season.
