The Giants found themselves in a tight spot down two-games to none in a four-game set against the Padres. They'd just dropped started from both Tim Lincecum and Matt Cain, but Madison Bumgarner and Barry Zito got the job done in the end (or more accurately, Javier Lopez and Zito), earning a series split at home, salvaging what was a somewhat sorry outing in the first two games.
Lincecum and Cain are the top of the order right now, and while there's no immediate worry of either going on a big losing streak, they need to get back into the win column in games two and three. Lincecum is a guy who's found himself on the wrong end of a cold streak, but again, he's the Giants ace for a reason, and any bet on him going out there in game two and pitching a fantastic game is a safe one. Along with Ryan Vogelsong in game one, they'll look to get through this three-game set against the New York Mets at home in a better state than the previous.
The Mets are in a bad place right now. They're ten games back of the division-leading Phillies and yet ... they're still in third place of the NL East. It's clearly a two-man race right now, and anything can happen, but they absolutely have to get it in gear. They've actually done that to some extent, beating the Dodgers in their most recent series three games to one, and they're winners in eight of their last twelve ... so getting it in gear seems apt.
As mentioned, the Giants will be sending Vogelsong, Lincecum and Cain to the mound, they'll meet R.A. Dickey, Chris Capuano and Mike Pelfrey.
