2011 Tour De France, Stage Five Results: Mark Cavendish Claims Victory Amidst Numerous Crashes

The 2011 Tour De France wrapped up an accident-filled fifth stage that saw sprinter Mark Cavendish emerge victorious with a strong push over the final 50 meters. Thomas Voeckler led for much of the closing stretch but ran out of gas over the final three meters and fell into the middle of the peloton after leading by as much as 67 seconds. The peloton saw numerous splits early on as the stage saw at least ten separate crashes. However, most of the GC riders hung with the pack leaving the overall standings intact.

Levi Leipheimer was involved in one of the crashes that involved twelve cyclists including Sylvain Chavanel, Bradley Wiggins and Laurens Ten Dam. Fortunately they were all able to recover and return to the peloton by the end of the race. Voeckler and Jeremy Roy led the race heading into the final 25 kilometers but a change in the wind and the emergence of the sprinters was enough to cost them a chance at a home country victory.

Leipheimer remains 18 seconds back of leader Thor Hushovd but moved from 15th to 14th as Tejay Van Garderen stumbled his way to 2:46 back of the peloton on stage five. Team Radio Shack currently has three cyclists in the top 14 with Andreas Kloden ten seconds back in fifth place, and Leipheimer and Chris Horner tied at 18 seconds back.

Team BMC Racing, based in Santa Rosa, is riding on the hopes of second place Cadel Evans who is one second back of the yellow jersey. George Hincapie is the next closest at 2:10 back. Here is a rundown of the top of the leaderboard through five stages.
